New Sheep Fluke and Worm Drench from Pfizer Animal Health

A new combination fluke and worm drench for sheep is being launched by Pfizer Animal Health following the acquisition of Fort Dodge.

Cydectin TriclaMox Oral Solution for Sheep, is a combination of moxidectin (0.1%) and triclabendazole (5%) and is the only product to kill all stages of fluke and provide a 35 day persistent activity against the main stomach worms, Teladorsagia and Haemonchus, in a single dose.

The new product is intended to treat mixed infections of fluke and worms in order to reserve its use to areas where both parasites are prevalent and thereby help prevent undue selection for resistance on either compound.

Cydectin TriclaMox is designed for dosing in spring to give long lasting control of worms and eliminate adult flukes which have accumulated through the autumn and winter. Dosing in the autumn is also important to control roundworms and eliminate immature flukes, especially early immature fluke which are not killed by any compound other than triclabendazole. If a third treatment for fluke is required in mid winter the recommendation is to use a straight flukicide and one other than triclabendazole, for example, closantel, to kill late immature and adult fluke. This is in order to rotate the flukicide, avoiding use of the same one for extended periods and to avoid unnecessary dosing for roundworms.

“The activity of Cydectin TriclaMox is attributed to a combination of two active ingredients, each with a different mechanism of action, so there is no overlap between the compounds which might otherwise lead to enhanced selection for resistance,” explains Pfizer’s vet David Bartram.

“Previously, sheep fluke and worm combinations relied on the benzimidazoles (BZ) or levamisole (LV) for the wormer element. As such they did not include the most potent group available – the macrocylic lactones (ML). The first ML class combination containing ivermectin to be launched does not offer persistency against roundworms and has a lower potency compared to moxidectin. Cydectin TriclaMox contains the potent and persistent wormer moxidectin (0.1%), and the flukicide, triclabendazole (5%) which in combination provide persistent roundworm control with broad spectrum fluke control in a single dose.”

He adds: “Given the level anthelmintic resistance to BZ, LEV or even IVM wormers, the introduction of a product containing moxidectin will be a real advantage to farmers wishing to treat mixed infections of fluke and worms with a single dose.”

Cydectin TriclaMox is recommended as a single oral drench of 1ml per 5kg bodyweight and has a 31 day meat withdrawal period. The product is recently licensed as a POM VPS animal medicine and is expected to be available from animal health distributors or vets from early March.
