The Bonsmara cattle
breed is the only beef breed that has been scientifically bred right from
the start of the breeding project initiated in 1937, by the Animal Scientist,
Jan C. Bonsma, at Mara And Messina Research Stations, situated in Northern
Transvaal, South Africa.
When the first Bonsmaras where brought to Namibia some thirty years ago, the breeders remained members of the South African breeders association. After Namibia’s independence, in 1991, an independent Namibian Bonsmara Association was founded.
Some 400 Bonsmara embryos were first imported into Australia in 1998 from the Republic of South Africa, followed by semen from the USA. The Society was formed in 2000, and there are now over 3000 Bonsmara infused cattle in the country.
