|
On the evening of Friday 28th October Harrison & Hetherington's
Borderway Mart was the venue for the 23rd Northern Expo Holstein
Show. The show boasting an entry of over 100 top class animals
welcomed Mr Brian Garrison of Ohio as the judge.
Throughout the evening the electric atmosphere was enjoyed by
exhibitors, visitors and sponsors. This annual show which
is seeing it's popularity increase year by year and is said
to be one of the main event's in the dairy calendar certainly
lived up to it's reputation on this mild October evening. With
entries received from as far afield as Staffordshire, Wrexham,
Cheshire and Lanarkshire as well as a huge and loyal contingency
from Cumbria and Lancashire. Over thirty-four exhibitors
had entered the evening show with a third of them exhibiting for
their first time ever. The show, which is undoubtedly going
from strength to strength enjoyed it's usual high standard
of cattle forward with particular attention being paid to the calf
section of the show where nearly forty calves were entered into
three classes. The calves were competing for the new calf
championship, which the committee have introduced to the show this
year with The Michael Armstrong Trophy kindly donated and presented
by the Armstrong Family of Wolfa in memory of Michael going to
the champion calf.
The show kicked off with the calf classes receiving a very positive
response from the increasing crowd. Commencing the calf classes
was the class for calves born on or after 1st December 2004 and
the handlers being aged under 16 years. This class was well
attended with ten entries forward. The winning calf came
from first time exhibitor's Andrew & Jane Whittaker's “Knowlesmere” herd
from Cheshire with Knowlesmere Gibson Papoose a Silky
Gibson daughter born on 2nd December
2004 and ably handled by son Michael Whittaker aged thirteen years. Taking
second place in this opening class was Messrs Armstrong of Wolfa's Designer
Jorden Lozan PI by Roylane Jordan and
led by Richard Armstrong aged fourteen years. Third place
went to Paul Findley from Wrexham's Holmland Astro
Dallas PI by Oseeana Astronomical PI ET and
was led by Isobelle Meakin aged 15 years.
The second class of the night saw a ring of sixteen calves forward. The
first prize in this strong class was presented to J & V Barlow's “Painley” herd
with Painley Dunrod Iron Brandysnap PI ET, a Boss
Iron daughter. The second prize in this class went
to Carhall Jordan Gail 3 PI ET a Roylane
Jordan daughter from Ian & Joyce Mallinson's “Carhall” herd
from Armathwaite near Carlisle. In third place respectfully
was another smart heifer from the Barlow's “Painley” herd
namely Painley Leduc Tammy 28 PI by Lystel Leduc. From
this extremely strong class of calves born Between August and November
2004 it is worth noting that the top three placed calves will all
come under the hammer at this years Borderway Black & White
Sale on Saturday 3rd December.
The final class in the calf section was for maiden heifers and
saw another well attended class with eight entries forward. The
noted Whittaker's “Knowlesmere” herd took home
another 1st prize with Knowlesmere Gibson Nell PI another Silky
Gibson daughter. This calf went on to receive the
Michael Armstrong Perpetual championship trophy in the calf section
with stable mate Knowlesmere Gibson Papoose being
crowned Reserve Champion Calf and lifting the Semen World/World
Wide Sires Perpetual Trophy.
As the judging swiftly progressed into the junior section the buzz
and excitement could be felt all round the hall with a packed ringside
of spectators controlled by the professionalism of the judges final
decisions. The championship in the junior section of the
show along with the title of Exhibitor bred Junior Champion went
to Warnelview Integrity Wonder. This was
a stylish heifer shown and bred by JH & A Wilson & Sons
of Wood Farm, Thursby whose noted “Warnelview” herd
was recently crowned Premier Holstein Herd 2005. By Robthom
Integrity and out of an EX91 Boulet Charles backed
by an EX93 Browndale Stardust this awesome June
calved heifer who has so far given 4543kgs in 125 days at 3.27%BF
and 3.17%P simply shone in the ring.
A highlight to the show was seeing so many new exhibitors entering
top class animals with the award for the new exhibitor gaining
the most points in the show deservedly going to Andrew & Jane
Whittaker's “Knowlesmere” herd.
The Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder awards sponsored by
Holstein UK went to J & V Barlow's “Painley” herd
who exhibiting at the show for the second consecutive year gained
points through a fantastic string of five homebred cattle brought
all the way from Minshull Hall, Church Minshull, Cheshire.
The Grand Finale saw a breathtaking line up of cattle of the highest
calibre all with their strong and correct attributes to the Holstein
breed. With the crowd silcenced Mr Brian Garrison talked
briefly and to the point about the great cows he had lined up before
him. He went on to announce his Grand Champion as Ewefields
Lucy 7 EX92 (2). This senior cow in milk bred by
Winston Warhurst and shown by John Harrison of F Harrison & Sons
from Crossrigg, Cliburn, Penrith certainly had the x-factor and
would be a worthy champion at any top dairy show. Lucy is
a true dairy cow classified EX on all traits and
is most certainly fulfilling the Harrisons dream's along
with their sideboard with trophies from local shows this season
and this being her sixth championship accolade having won Champion
Holstein and Champion of Champion's Penrith Show; Champion
Holstein and Interbreed champion Cockermouth Show; Champion Holstein
and Interbreed Champion Appleby Show; Interbreed Champion Skelton
Show and Best Dam & Daughter, 1st Senior Cow and Overall Dairy
Champion Westmorland Show 2005. Having calved at the end
of May.
Lucy is still giving 50kgs of milk daily and
it has been said by many that if she was classified again we
could possibly see her top 94 points. Lucy who
is by Weeton Jaguar Jed has three Excellent sisters
and her Grand Dam won the Dry Cow Championship at the Royal Show
in the late 1980's. Lucy was also
awarded the prize for the Best Udder in the show and earlier
in the night won the Production and Inspection class.
The Harrison's will be venturing to Agriscot with Lucy to
try and continue their fairytale journey of 2005 where we wish
them the very best of luck.
The champion breeders pair trophy was awarded to RJ & D Loftus
Farms who also took the overall Reserve championship award with
their homebred junior cow in milk Weeton Journalist Helen
PI VG88. Local breeders and loyal supporters to
the Expo Show Stephen and Ann Morley of Petteril Bank, Southwaite
are always's well up in the prizes and picked up the title
of Honourable mention for Llydan Storm Farrah PI EX94 (2).
Enourmous credit goes to all exhibitors from near and far for
submitting entries that can only increase the popularity of the
Northern Expo Holstein Show as “One of the Best Dairy Shows
in the UK”.
Thanks go to the judge, Exhibitors and spectators and of course
the many, many sponsors especially the main joint sponsors Farmers
Guardian, Holstein UK, Pye Bibby Agriculture and Semen
World Ltd for making the 23rd Northern Expo Holstein Show
a truly memorable event.

“I was very pleased with the quality of cattle throughout
the show,
especially in the milking cow classes.
The Winners were especially
good,
and also many of the classes had good cows throughout the entire
class.
I was very pleased with the Champion Calf, Junior Champion
and overall
Champion Cow and felt they were all solid winners as well as logical
selections.
Each of them represented the breed, the breeders
and the
show very well."
