The Welsh Winter Fair proved another great showcase for
the Limousin breed and rounded the Winter fatstock season off in tremendous
style with Limousin sired animals winning the Reserve Overall Championship,
the Heifer Championship, the Reserve Heifer Championship, the Baby Beef
section, the Young Handlers Competition and the Exhibitor Bred award
as well as taking the Supreme Championship in the Beef Ribs Competition.
A packed ringside on the Tuesday saw Posh Dosh from local exhibitor
Mr BE Williams, Station Court, Sennybridge, Powys – and brought
forward by Neil Lloyd - gain the Heifer Championship, the Winston Bowen
Memorial Trophy and Reserve Overall titles from judge Mr Chris Stubbs,
Hollins Farm, Utkinton, Tarporley, Cheshire who praised her “excellent
length and shape.” Posh Dosh was bought privately from breeder
H&E Powell and this July 2004 Limousin-cross heifer hit the scales
at 552kg.
The Reserve Heifer Championship went to JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen
Farm, Llanidloes, Powys with their Limousin-sired heifer, Red Star, out
of a Limousin cross cow bred by Steven Graham.
In the Limousin classes, Buster from Emily Jones, Coedmore Hall, Cellan,
Lampeter took the steer championship with Clatworthy & Tippetts’ 18
month bullock out of Homebyres Safeway standing Reserve. Dolcorsllwyn
Vance shown by TC Edwards, Pencraig Fawr, Betws Gwerfyl Goch, Corwen
was awarded the Champion pedigree Limousin title.
Taking home the honours in the Baby Beef section was the 259kg Limousin-sired
show steer exhibited by DH Morgan, Nantgwynne, Llanddeusant, Llangadog,
Carmarthenshire by a homebred bull out of Kype Interrogate and out of
a Limousin cross dam.
Further successes were enjoyed by the Limousin breed in the Beef Ribs
Competition held on the Monday and forming part of the Royal Smithfield
Club’s National Festival of Meat. Mr Phillip Davies, New Mills,
Newtown, Powys went one better than his Reserve Championship last year
by taking home the Supreme Championship in 2005 with his Limousin cross
April 2004 born 350kg heifer.
Judging the Young Handlers competition were Mr Michael Alford, Foxhill
Farm, Blackburgh, Devon, Mr Rob Rattray, Chalybeate St, Aberystwyth and
Mr Terry Jones, Bowley, Clehonger, Hereford. This proved a clean sweep
for the Limousin breed with Berwyn Hughes of Cwmhendryd, Lampeter winning
the heifer section with the 15 month old Smarty Pants and Laura Cheacker
of Ostbridge Manor Farm, Pilning, Bristol gaining the steer title with
her July 2004 born Tom, a homebred steer by Bowsland Officer. Tom was
also named Best Exhibitor Bred Animal.
Our thanks go all those members of the South Wales & Mid West Club
who helped out at the well-attended Limousin stand and to the Griffiths & Edwards
families for providing the bulls on display.
