Biggest Ever Display Of Beef Cattle Breeds At Beef Expo
27/04/06

This year’s Beef Expo 2006, to be held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday, June 2, has attracted the most comprehensive display of beef cattle breeds and crosses ever seen at the UK’s national beef event.

More than 300 cattle of 23 beef breeds will be represented in the beef breed societies’ exhibition area and will be a major attraction for the thousands of beef farmers from all over the UK and Ireland who will be attending.

“This will be the largest demonstration of the different breeds of beef cattle seen at any event in the UK and reflects the importance of Beef Expo as a promotional event for the beef industry,” said event organiser, Euan Emslie, who organises the annual beef event on behalf of the National Beef Association.

“Commercial beef producers will have a unique opportunity of assessing the advantages of each breed for themselves and learning how the various breeds fit in to the stratified structure of beef production in the UK.”

Mr Emslie said the display of pedigree beef bulls, heifers and cows with calves at foot was one of the most important aspects of Beef Expo at a time when beef producers were seeking to reduce costs, improve efficiency and maximise returns from the market following CAP reforms and the loss of production-related subsidies.

“It is horses for courses and ensuring you have the right breed, or combination of breeds, to suit your particular circumstances, is one of the keys to profitable beef production,” said Mr Emslie.

“All the breeds of commercial significance in the UK will be represented and will have breed experts on hand to talk to beef producers about the merits of their breeds.”

Three leading industry figures have been invited to judge the best breed society display and will be assessing the suitability of each breed for modern beef production and where breeders see their breed in five years’ time.

Exhibition space at Beef Expo has been reserved by the following beef breed societies – Aberdeen-Angus, Beef Shorthorn, British Bazadaise, British Belgian Blue, British Blonde, British Charolais, British Limousin, British Simmental, Galloway, Gascoine, Hereford, Highland, Longhorn, Luing, Murray Grey, Parthenais, Piemontese, Red Poll, Salers, South Devon, Stabiliser, Welsh Black and Whitebred Shorthorn.

Other features of the one-day event will include a National Show of suckled calves, stockjudging competitions, machinery demonstrations, educational exhibits, seminars and a comprehensive trade stand section.

On the day before Beef Expo, delegates will have the opportunity of visiting three Cumbrian beef farms followed by a major beef conference and pre-event dinner.
