South America Dominates Beef Imports

South America accounted for 90 per cent of the EU's fresh, frozen and chilled beef imports last year (2005) according to the latest Meat Demand Trends from Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) Economics.

In all, the Union imported 264,300 tonnes of mainly boneless cuts with Brazil keeping its lead position with 60 per cent of the total. Second largest supplier was Argentina with a 23 per cent share.

The latest Meat Demand Trends also contains features and figures on retail meat and producer prices, ethical consumerism in the UK and expenditure and meat consumption.
