Protein Provider Without Need For Nitrogen Fertiliser
11/10/06

A new ryegrass and red clover seeds mixture offering high yields of home grown protein with no reliance on artificial nitrogen is one of the highlights of British Seed Houses’ new Seed Mark range.

The Protein Provider mixture, which includes top yielding hybrid and perennial Aber High Sugar Grass varieties as well as the new AberRuby red clover, is designed as a two to three year ley offering three cuts per season plus late season grazing.

“This is a premium mixture offering the very latest and most successful varieties from the IGER grass and clover breeding programmes,” explains Michael Shannon of British Seed Houses. “The intermediate perennial ryegrass AberStar is the highest yielding variety of its category on both NIAB and SAC Recommended Lists, as is the hybrid ryegrass AberEcho. Combined with a strong red clover component, which includes the top yielding AberRuby, these high sugar ryegrasses offer outstanding yields of high quality silage over three cuts.

“The high red clover content boosts the protein levels in the forage and provides a significant nitrogen-fixing component to the sward, equivalent to 150-200 kgN/ha per year. The red clover also adds grazing value to the sward, and makes the late season aftermath ideal for fattening lambs for example.”

Protein Provider is available through British Seed Houses as part of the company’s latest Seed Mark range of top quality grazing and silage mixtures. Seed Mark catalogues can be obtained from British Seed Houses distributors or by contacting the company at either Bristol (Tel - 0117 982 3691) or Lincoln (Tel – 01522 866620).
