Aberdeen-Angus to 10,000gns at “Border Blacks” Sale

Strong bidding by new breeders set the pace at the fourth “Border Blacks” on-farm sale of Aberdeen-Angus females at Wedderlie, Gordon, Berwickshire, on Saturday (September 30).

The 53 lots from J and J Campbell’s Wedderlie herd sold to a top of 10,000gns to average £2217 with a guest consignment of four from John Elliot’s Rawburn herd at Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, Roxburghshire, reaching 6000gns twice to average £5565.

An offering of 12 from B Q Farming Partnership, Bowhill, Selkirk, averaged £1352.50 with a top of 2400gns and four from Playfair Farms, Morebattle Tofts, Kelso, sold to 2000gns to average £1706.25. One from Duff Burrell, Broome Park, Alnwick, Northumberland, sold for 1400gns.

“It was a very successful sale with a lot of new people buying, including first-time buyers from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland,” said auctioneer, David Leggat, of United Auctions, Perth.

“The large turn-out of buyers, and the prices paid for an excellent selection of quality cattle, underlines the continuing strong demand for pedigree Aberdeen-Angus cattle at the present time to satisfy the requirements of the expanding commercial market for Aberdeen-Angus beef cattle.”

The top price was paid by leading Suffolk sheep breeder, Keith Evans, Plas Llewelyn, Dolwen, Abergele, Conwyn, North Wales, for the star female in the Wedderlie consignment, the five year old cow, Wedderlie Kensue A239, a New Zealand embryo import by the American sire, TC Stockman 2164, sold with a five month old bull calf at foot by Wedderlie Eriexad B428.  Her first son, Wedderlie Kentucky D714, sold for 14,000gns at Perth in February to the Fordel herd. Two daughters and a sib sister have been retained in the Wedderlie herd along with seven embryos.

Second highest price was 8000gns for the three year old cow, Wedderlie Privoba C564, by Tui Tidy Ben, and her six month old heifer calf by Wedderlie Blackadder Z093. Buyers were Scottish Coal Ltd, Weston Heath Farm, Sheriffhales, Shifnal, Shropshire, who took three more lots from Wedderlie at 3000gns (twice) and 2000gns.

This was followed at 4700gns for the six year old cow, Wedderlie Ebbora Z113, by Tui Blackmark, and her five month old bull calf by Wedderlie Blackbest A243, to Messrs A Walker, Newbiggin Hill, Hexham, Northumberland, and 4500gns for the yearling heifer, Wedderlie Errobex E945, by Wedderlie Eriexad B428, and 4400gns for the five year old cow, Wedderlie Oscara A214, by HF Dreamstreet 21F, and her six month old heifer calf by Tui Bon Y019, both to Ian Service and Co Ltd, Moorpark of Barr, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.

Lot 50 offered buyers the choice of the two top yearling heifers in the herd by Aynho Rossiter Eric B125, purchased jointly with the Idvies herd for the second top price of 16,000gns at Perth in February, 2005. The successful bidder, Martin Sheahan, Luddenmore, Grange, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, Eire, opted for Wedderlie Emillicent E020.

A similar choice for the top two yearling daughters of Tui Bon Y019 resulted in Wedderlie Nelight E003 realising 2500gns to M R McCornick, Boreland, Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbrightshire.

The first female into the ring, Wedderlie Orari 6th, an eight year old daughter of HF Dreamstreet 21F, and her six month old bull calf by Wedderlie Negrom A200, got the sale off to a good start, selling for 3200gns to David Wellock and Mrs Wendy Hoare, Hurris House Farm, Otterburn, Skipton, Yorkshire.

The last female from Wedderlie realised 2400gns to Northern Ireland buyer, A McElroy, Glenross House, Lisnarrick, Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh. This was the five year old cow, Wedderlie Princelia A197, by Tui Blackmark.

Wedderlie also sold at bull at 2000gns and steer at 1200gns.

Mr McElroy also paid the joint highest price for one of the two top females in Mr Elliot’s Rawburn consignment, going to 6000gns to secure the two year old heifer, Rawburn Juno Eric D333, by the 25,000gns Wedderlie Netmark A281.

The other 6000gns bid came from Daylesford Organic Farm, Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire, for another two year old heifer, Huxton Duchess Noreen D175, by Rawburn El Cid Z432.

This was followed at 5000gns for the six year old cow, Rawburn Evert Z013, by Rawburn Transformer, and her six month old heifer calf by Ankonian Elixir 100, to Keith Evans, and 4200gns for another two year old daughter of El Cid, Huxton Bloom D183, to Mr McCornick.

Daylesford Organic Farm, who were the biggest buyers of the day taking no fewer than 17 lots, also paid 2400gns for Eildon Rosa Erica D663, and the same price was paid by Mr Baxter, 85 Feystown Road, Glenarm Ballymena, Northern Ireland, for Eildon Ruby D620. Both were two year old daughters of Rawburn Duke of Buccleugh 4th from B Q Farming Partnership Ltd.

Mr Baxter’s other purchases included 2000gns for Playfair Farms’ two year old heifer, Tofts Evergay D718, by Tofts Deputy Z040, and 1400gns for Mr Burrell’s eight year old cow, Rushcroft Evita X1, and her six month old heifer calf by Wedderlie Neric B378.

Five embryos offered by Mr Elliot from one of the top cows in Canada, Royal Rosebud 61A, fertilised with semen from the top American sire, Hoff First Edition 058, sold for 1100gns each to J Gilmour and Co Ltd, Macmerry, East Lothian.
