BCPC (British Crop Production Council) has revised
and fully updated its best selling sprayer operator books. Field
Scale Spraying (formerly Boom & Fruit Sprayers Handbook)
and Small Scale Spraying (formerly Hand-Held & Amenity
Sprayers Handbook) now include up-to-the minute guidance on
such important topics as nozzle selection, equipment choice, safe
working practices, calibration and much more.

The Field Scale book is clearly focussed
on the needs of operators using boom sprayers in arable crops,
grassland and field vegetables or large air-assisted sprayers associated
with fruit and horticultural spraying. Small Scale Spraying covers
a multitude of sectors where hand-held equipment or small amenity
boom sprayers are employed including parks, golf courses, forestry
and gardens, pavements and other hard surfaces, nurseries and glasshouses.
Both books are packed with practical tips and best practice advice in line with
the revised Code of Practice for Plant Protection Products and the new Agricultural
Waste Regulations. A fresh new design helps readers easily find the information
they need.
The
books have a new editor, mechanisation expert Bill Basford. “At
the end of the day safe and effective spraying comes down to the
skill and expertise of sprayer operators,” he says. “Whether
you’re new to spraying and yet to obtain your Certificate of
Competence or an ‘old hand’, I think you should find
these new books helpful.”
Field Scale Spraying provides practical
guidance on the efficient and safe use of trailed and mounted boom
sprayers along with air-assisted orchard and tunnel sprayers. Sections
explain the types and structure of sprayers available, pumps and
control systems, filters and filtration, nozzles, atomisers and
fans. Spray quality, nozzle codes and calibration are explained
fully with worked examples
to guide operators through the process. General advice on good
spraying practice, sprayer decontamination and maintenance as well
as disposal is also provided. The section on LERAPs has been extended
to cover orchard spraying.
Small
Scale Spraying details the decisions, equipment and background needs to
all small-scale spraying operations and includes guidance on the use of lever-operated,
compression and knapsack sprayers, mistblowers, CDA sprayers, wheeled sprayers
and mounted and self-propelled equipment. Sections advise on the types of pumps
used, sprayer design, control systems and filtration. Spray quality, nozzle
codes and calibration is explained fully with worked examples to guide operators
through the process.
