Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 77 prime cattle, 9 young beef bulls, 7,051 spring lambs and 6832 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th December 2006.

Skipton Christmas prime lambs champions

Although averages were slightly down on the week, the overall quality was not as good. Top price of 143.5p & 138.5p for Limousin bullocks from Faulding Cleugh and purchased by Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, Carlisle and T. Head, others from the same farm to 136.5p, 134.5p to Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, other Limousin 136.5p, 132.5p Hallburn to Market Hall Meats, Carlisle and Woodhead Bros., 130.5p The Gill to T. Head. Charolais bullocks from Hallburn to 131.5p, 125.5p G Moor & Woodhead Bros.

The heifer section topped at 133.5p for a Blonde from Hallburn and purchased by Border Meats, others 127.5p Brisco Hill also to Border Meats. Limousins from Kirtlevale to 128.5p and purchased by Messrs Nattrass, Butcher, Charolais from Hallburn 126.5p, 125.5p to Border Meats. Belgian Blues 125.5p, 121.5p Justicetown to T. Head.

A small show of young bulls sold to 122.5p & 119.5p from Southlambhill others 114.5p Randalinton. Belgian Blues 117.5p Randalinton.

The larger show of prime lambs met with keen demand throughout and all customers were eager to fill orders peaking at £61 for Rouges from Riggshield and to 150p for Beltex from Allanshaws.

The lightweight lambs peaked at £48 for Beltex from Allanshaws, Suffolk x £38.80 Middleknowes, Cheviot x £38 Tormitchell, Hill Cheviot £34 Beechcroft, Cheviot £38 Kirkland Green, Bleu de Maines £43.20 Nilston Rigg, Texels £42 Tormitchell, Charollais £41 Pingle, Greyface £35.20 Terrona, Blackface £35.20 Glenfernate, Swaledale £31.20 Westburnhope, Herdwicks £32.80, £32 Haithwaite, Shetland £30 Haithwaite.

The cast ewes and rams were another large entry and with the usual buyers present, trade was similar for heavy ewes with light ewes easier on the week.

Top was £70.50 for Texel ewes from Nether Stenries, others £68.50 Easthouse, £66.50 Grey Peel. Suffolks £54.50 Newry, Suffolk x £55.50 Waterside, Beltex £64.50 East House, Charollais £64.50 Nether Stenries, Halfbreds £47.50 Nether Stenries, Leicesters £50.50 Stackbraes, North Cheviots £48.50 Allanshaws, Greyfaces £41.50 Keepwick.
