The couple amassed a plethora of tickets on the
2006 show circuit with their six strong show team which featured
their senior stock bull Hackleton Victor, who also claimed the
Bull of the Year title. In addition, Rushfield’s new stockman,
David Oliver was awarded the Stockman of the Year title.
Victor who is a Roundhill Rocky son bred by Northampton based
Hackleton Farms, was secured at Carlisle in November 2005 after
claiming the day’s male championship. “We picked
him out immediately we saw him,” Vanessa explained. “We
were impressed by his excellent conformation and fantastic feet
and legs.” Victor also caught the judges’ eye at
the Newark and Notts and Derby Shows where he creamed off the
breed titles, he was in reserve slot at the Great Yorkshire and
headed his class at The Royal.
Running neck and neck with Victor throughout the season was Darshams
Sacha, the celebrated five year old who had already enjoyed a
distinguished show career prior to the Webbs purchasing her for
8,000gns at Darshams dispersal last March. She went on to amass
numerous tickets including the interbreed at the Herts County
and the breed championship at the Bucks County and found herself
in reserve place for the Female of the Year title, below Don
Marshall’s (Scropton, Derbyshire) home - bred Cotehouse
Violet whose greatest accolades for the season included The Royal
female and overall reserve championship, and the Royal Highland
female and reserve supreme championship, as well as the Staffordshire
breed title.”
“We are pleased to have recaptured this award for the third
time and achieved yet another goal for the season,” said
Vanessa who together with James clocked up more than 2,000 miles
on the 2006 circuit visiting 15 shows. “We’ve been
exhibiting pedigree Charolais for the last 12 years and our success
has been steadily gaining momentum. While the show ring takes
up a lot of our spare time, it really does pay off. In the last
12 months we have virtually sold out of bulls to both the pedigree
and commercial sector.”
In reserve place for the Eprinex Pour-On Charolais Herd of the
Year Award was Andrew Taylor, with his Brinsley herd based at
Brinsley, Nottingham. Andrew was also in reserve slot for the
Stockman of the Year award. Third place in the herd section went
to Inverlochy owned by father and son team, John and Raymond
Irvine, Ballindalloch, Banffshire. Raymond was in the same position
for the stockman award.
Merial’s Brian Rice commented: “James and Vanessa
couldn’t be more deserving of this, their third Eprinex
Pour-On Award. There was tough competition in this year’s
entries, however it’s clear that the Webbs have identified
exactly what the judges want from a Charolais and are absolutely
consistent in producing quality, well-bred animals time after
time. By securing Stockman of the Year too with David Oliver,
it’s evident that they have made commitment to detail and
good animal husbandry part of the ethos of Rushfield.”
