First Northern Limousin Extravaganza a runaway success
11/05/07

The inaugural show for juvenile Limousin cattle at Craven Cattle Marts’ Skipton Auction Mart (Wed, May 9) proved an overwhelming success and will now become an annual event.

Dubbed the “Northern Limousin Extravaganza,” the launch fixture for pedigree and commercial cattle (sired by a Limousin) saw a superb turnout of high quality cattle, with 37 pedigrees and 14 commercials entered for the show, impressing judge William Smith, of Millbrook Limousins in Ireland.

The commercial champion and overall show champion was an 11-month-old three-quarters Limousin heifer “Katherine,” brought forward by North Wales breeder Jim Hollingsworth, of Afonwen, Mold.

Bred by John Richardson and family in Penrith and bought as a calf at this year’s Penrith Spring sale, the victor was sired by Rossignol and is out of a Muirhouse Lagonda-sired dam. It proved a worthy show champion, exhibiting great conformation, style and scope, according to the judge. The title winner will be shown extensively this summer by Mr Hollingsworth.

The reserve show champion was Tomschoice Bethan, sired by Ronick Member, out of a Rake Terence dam. The January 2006-born heifer, was bred and shown by James Cooper, of JM & SP Cooper, who run Tomschoice Limousins at Dacre, Harrogate.

The runner-up, who had success on the northern show circuit as a calf and is again destined for a busy summer, also took the pedigree championship, narrowly ahead of Scorboro Barcelona, from JCG Bloom & Son, of Scarborough. By Loganburn Talisman, this March 2006-born bull was a clear class winner and pedigree male champion.

Reserve commercial championship went to “Johny Cool,” a steer shown by Derbyshire breeder SE Sellars.

The launch event was supported by the North East Limousin Breeders Club and the British Limousin Society, and attracted a long list of sponsors, which enabled a prize fund of £2,300 to be offered.

Reserve champion Mr Cooper, who helped organise the event, said afterwards: “The show proved to be a tremendous success and was enjoyed by all taking part. Importantly, it achieved its main aims – to encourage breeders that do not normally show to ‘have a go’ with cattle out for the first time in a safe and secure environment, also generating a huge amount of interest from potential future customers. The Northern Limousin Extravaganza will now be part of the regular show calendar.”
