NFU, NSA, NPA, LAA and NBA Joint Statement on Animal Movements
07/08/07

The following joint statement has been issued by the NFU, the National Sheep Association, the National Beef Association, the National Pig Association and the Livestock Auctioneers Association on animal movements.

As part of the short term disease control strategy a complete movement ban is seen by the industry as absolutely necessary.

We recognise that this restriction puts businesses under immense pressure, but we must resist illegal movements as this could delay the relaxation of movements.

Industry bodies are all working very closely with Defra to prioritise the unwinding of movements at the earliest opportunity.

This will be based on an ongoing risk assessment in order that we minimise the impact on the health and welfare of the animals and those handling them.

Animal keepers are urged to check their stock regularly and to keep everything clean. They are also reminded that disinfectant and cleaning material should be provided at the entrance of holdings and that meetings between keepers should be avoided.
