Ian’s new role as Health Schemes Manager will involve the management and promotion of the schemes throughout the UK. Ian will be working with SAC’s vets who have considerable experience in the control, eradication or accreditation of specific diseases in flocks and herds.

Originally from the heart of Aberdeenshire, Ian was educated in Huntly before attending the University of Aberdeen where he graduated with a BSc Agriculture with Honours in Animal Science.

On graduating from Aberdeen, Ian joined the Meat & Livestock Commission, spending over 30 years with the organisation before moving on to MLC Signet Breeding Services. There, he was heavily involved in the implementation and promotion of modern cattle breeding techniques in the form of EBV’s throughout the UK. He also gave consultancy advice to beef and sheep farmers, undertook benchmarking on livestock farms and formed a number of close working relationships with many of the breed societies and pedigree producers throughout the UK. As a consequence, Ian is a well known figure at shows and sales throughout the UK.

In June 2006 Ian joined SAC as Beef and Sheep Specialist in the North of Scotland, where he gave advice directly to farmers and through open meetings, beef and sheep groups and monitor farms.

Ian commented, “Pedigree breeders and commercial producers will be well aware of the cost of disease outbreaks on their farms. Many go on to join the health schemes operated by SAC, particularly as increasing numbers of buyers continue to source stock from herds with known health status.”
