14/04/08

The annual Beautiful Farm Awards recognises and rewards farmers for their care and stewardship of the British countryside, and the competition is now open to all farmers across the UK.

Finalists last year included:

• Welsh dairy farmer, Andrew Gresty, whose carefully managed ponds are home to Lesser Silver Water Beetles and the Great Crested Newts

• Rutland farmer, Andrew Brown, who hosts school visits on his newly planted woodland and preserved ancient grassland

• Overall competition winner, the Johnson family, who have established more than eight and a half kilometres of permissive footpaths on the farm for birdwatchers and ramblers, as well as offering guided farm tours to the public and local schools

"The Beautiful Farm Awards recognise the largely unpaid work that farmers do maintaining and managing the countryside for everyone," said 2007 award finalist, Andrew Gresty.

“Many people enjoy the beauty of the countryside but perhaps don’t appreciate the unsung work of farmers who combine a modern, productive business with the protection and enhancement of the rural environment,” said Andrew Watson, New Holland UK business director. “The awards are not simply for the most aesthetically pleasing farm, but for those developing a profitable business while improving their natural surroundings for generations to come.”

New Holland, sponsor of the awards and market leader on the promotion of biodiesel in agriculture, is looking for farms that create a positive image for agriculture by farming in balance with nature.

Those wishing to enter the competition simply need to enter a photo and short statement outlining their activities on protecting and enhancing the environment and developing their business in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The winner will be awarded the Most Beautiful Farm title, which they can use for marketing purposes, and receive an all-expense paid trip to Italy, including a trip to one of New Holland’s industry-leading factories. The awards will be presented at a special lunch for the finalists to be held at the House of Commons in November 2008.
