Limousin Bull Selected for Young Bull Promotion Scheme
14/08/08

Limousin bull Dinmore Bandit, owned by the Whinfellpark herd of Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, Clifton, Penrith, Cumbria has been selected for inclusion in the EBLEX sponsored Young Bull Promotion Scheme.

Dinmore Bandit

The ongoing aim of this established scheme is to promote the use of genetically superior bulls across herds within a breed.

Dinmore Bandit, bred and sold by Paul Dawes, Dinmore Manor, Dinmore, Hereford, was purchased at Carlisle’s February Limousin Sale for 28,000gns where he had stood as the pre-sale show’s Intermediate Champion.

Extremely well bred, Bandit is out of the Shire Pentagon sired Fleethill Sal who is a previous Royal Welsh Show Champion and Red Ladies Show and Sale Champion (2004) where she was purchased by Paul Dawes for 17,000gns. This summer she was part of the winning Interbreed Team of Five at the Royal Show. Dinmore Bandit’s sire is the Oxygene son Wilodge Tonka who himself was purchased for 30,000gns at Carlisle in 2003. Featuring excellent performance figures, Bandit has a top 1% Beef Value of LM+37 and ranks in the top 1% of the breed for 400 day growth and Muscle Score and in the top 10% for 200-day growth and muscle depth.

Further principle objectives of the scheme are; to promote rapid genetic improvement via reduced generation intervals and improved selection differentials and secondly, to improve the accuracy of EBVs by increasing the connectedness (related animals) amongst herds. To be considered for selection, bulls must ideally be in the top 1% of the breed for both Beef Value and Calving value as calculated in the BLUP evaluations at the time of selection. Bulls must be under 30 months old on the date of submission and must have 200 and 400-day-weights and scans recorded to be considered.

As well as the selection of a promising young bull to a set criteria, the YBPS sees the distribution of at least 100 straws of semen, free of charge, to at least 20 herds. All participating herds must be a member of the Beefbreeder service and all BLCS recording members are eligible to apply for an allocation of straws. The British Limousin Cattle Society has the responsibility for arranging the distribution of the semen.
