The Emmotts, of Currer Wood Farm, Steeton, landed title number two with a newly calven pedigree Holstein Friesian heifer by Avenham Westminster, the same sire as their June champion.

Awarded the BOCM Pauls Diary Cup – the company also sponsored the show - the victor, acquired from Robin Boothman, of Padiham, and giving seven gallons a fortnight after calving, sold for the day’s top price of £2,300 to show judge Wick Williams, of Wrenbury, Cheshire.

Mr Williams, who bought the Emmotts’ June champion, again received a £60 cash bonus as purchaser of the title winner from Farmers & Mercantile Insurance Brokers, of Boroughbridge.

For good measure, he also paid £2,080 for the second prize newly calven heifer from Robert Metcalfe, of Brearton, Harrogate, who was making his first appearance as a Craven Dairy Auction vendor. He also sold a second newly calven heifer for £1,940.

Show regular Malcolm Swires, of Haverah Park, Harrogate, achieved a clean sweep of prizes in the newly calven cows class, all falling to successful bids from Andrew Bradley, of Ryedale. The first prize winner and reserve show champion sold for £1,900, with the runner-up in class performing slightly better at £1,960.

Best of the in-calf cattle was a heifer from Marsden Farms, of Oakworth, which made £920. There were a total of 51 dairy cattle forward, with newly calven heifers averaging £1,636, newly calven cows £1,423, in-calf heifers £823 and in-calf cows £790.

The next Craven Dairy Auction is scheduled for Monday, August 18.
