British Beef Cattle Genetics Shipped to Australia and Germany 09/09/08

Interest in UK beef genetics is gathering momentum with the export this week of 34 Limousin and Charolais embryos to Australia following a recent shipment of 24 Aberdeen-Angus to Germany.

The shipment of Aberdeen-Angus to Germany comprised 20 heifers from the Aln herd of the former chairman of the National Beef Association, Duff Burrell.

Hexham-based Eggs-Port Ltd, who arranged the export deals, report increasing interest in semen, embryos and pedigree beef cattle from British herds.

“We are getting enquiries from all over the world from breeders interested in upgrading their herds with top-quality British genetics,” says Eggs-Port’s Sheila Eggleston. “The sale of Aberdeen-Angus cattle to Germany follows a tour of herds by German breeders and we expect to do more business with Germany with Aberdeen-Angus and other beef breeds in the future.”

A group representing the Aberdeen-Angus, Limousin and Charolais breeds is due to visit Bavaria in early October on a trade mission organised by Eggs-Port in conjunction with the Bavarian Cattle Breeders Association.

The consignment of embryos shipped to Australia this week includes eight from two of the top cows in the Emslies Limousin herd of Harry Emslie at Kinknockie, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire. It is believed to be the first export of Limousin embryos to Australia and the first export of embryos of any breed to Australia for two years.

The embryos are from the cows, Ballymoney Noisette and Wilodge Ritzy, and were fertilised with semen from Wilodge Tonka, Beefbreeder champion at the Royal and Royal Welsh Shows in 2002 and later sold for 30,000gns, and the leading French sire, Celestin.

Ballymoney Noisette is the dam of Ballymoney Veronica, Limousin Female of the Year in 2006 and winner of six inter-breed championships, while Wilodge Ritzy was breed champion at the Royal Show in 2002 and was purchased by Mr Emslie for 20,000gns as the foundation cow for the Emslies herd.

Mr Emslie and his partner, Lynwen Evans, are currently carrying out the most extensive embryo programme of any Limousin herd in the UK in their 50-cow herd.

The Charolais embryos were consigned by former international Charolais president, Murray Lyle, Mid Cambushinnie, Dunblane, from the cows, Loganbar Naomi and Loganbar Nicola, and Jim Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries, from the cow, Bonnykelly Pandora.

The shipment of Aberdeen-Angus to Germany comprised 20 heifers from the Aln herd of the former chairman of the National Beef Association, Duff Burrell, at Broome Park, Alnwick, Northumberland, and four from Neil F Massie’s and Sons’ Blelack herd at Dinnet, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.

The four heifers from Blelack and 10 from Aln have gone to Bernard Delle and the other 10 Aln heifers to Karl-Otto Lauck. Both have large herds of Aberdeen-Angus in Bavaria and are regular visitors to the Perth bull sales.

Eggs-Port have also exported a large consignment of Aberdeen-Angus, Beef Shorthorn, Dexter, Galloway and Polled Simmental semen to Switzerland.
