Parkinsons Land Debut Success at Craven Dairy Auction
02/09/08

The September Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton Auction Mart produced a debut local championship success for MD Parkinson & Son, of Holme Farm, Barden. (Mon, Sept 1)

The Craven Dairy Auction September champion is pictured in the Skipton ring with, from left, exhibitor Ian Parkinson, Steve Braithwaite, of BOCM Pauls, and judge and buyer Ian Dodson.

Exhibited by Ian Parkinson, the home-bred commercial Holstein Friesian newly calven cow had produced its second calf eight days prior to the show and was giving six gallons.

By the Parkinsons’ own stock bull, the title winner was purchased by show judge Ian Dodson, of Halifax, for £1,850, who also received a £60 cash bonus as buyer of the champion from regular sponsors Farmers & Mercantile, of Boroughbridge.

Local dairy farmer Jeremy Taylor, of Small House, Broughton, victor at the previous show and in search of an unprecedented seventh Craven Dairy Auction championship, had to settle for reserve honours this time around with a newly calven heifer producing 28 kilos from his reputable Smellows pedigree Holstein Friesian herd.

Nevertheless, the home-bred Smellows Cinderlass 3, by the AI sire Sandy-Valley Onyx, out of the high-yielding Smellows Cinderlass, achieved top price in show at £2,180 when acquired by Alan Outram, of Bury.

The runner-up, one of three newly calven heifers from Mr Taylor that all topped £2,000 in the sales ring, was also awarded the BOCM Pauls Craven Dairy Cup for the best newly calven heifer.

Brian Moorhouse, of Bell Busk, sold the second prize newly calven heifer for £1,960 to G Abbott & Sons, of Dacre, Harrogate, while the third in class from KJ & CA Hardcastle, of Darley Harrogate, made £2,018 when acquired by Andrew Ogden, Cowling.

The mid-September Craven Dairy Auction takes place on Monday, September 15, with entries accepted up to the day of sale.
