Swaledale females – almost 4,000 shearlings and correct ewes- converged on Skipton Auction Mart for the annual prize show and sale. (Sat, Oct 4)

The North Craven-based Pearson family – husband and wife Michael and Ruth, and their daughter Debbie, of Foredale Farm, Horton-in-Ribblesdale – were delighted to secure their first-ever championship success at Skipton with their pen of ten of ewes.
They sold for £98 a head to John Mason, Embsay, bettered only by the top-priced pen at £100 each from last year’s reserve champion Roy Nelson, of Lainger House, Bordley. The purchaser was M Crawshaw, Trawden.
The first prize shearlings from another Bordley exhibitor, Kevin Huck, sold for £87 per head to Gordon Haynes, Mitton, Clitheroe. Class prices were headed at £90 apiece by the second prize shearlings from Cameron and Irene Walton, Hellifield, acquired by co-judge Frank Brennand, Chapel-le-Dale. The other co-judges were Colin Willoughby, Leyburn, and Stephen Fawcett, Barden.
Three-crop ewes peaked at £75 each for a pen from FC, N & M Walker, Hartlington, with correct ewes selling to a high of £46 per head from T Robinson & Sons, Slaidburn.
Selling prices were stronger than the corresponding fixture last year, with an overall sale average of £43.69 per head achieved.
Swaledale shearlings to £90 (av £55.66), 3-crop ewes to £75 (£49.01), 4-crop ewes to £100 (£41.06), correct ewes to £46 (£28.50)
