What is thought to be a world record price for a single Mule wether lamb – an astonishing £1,450 - was realised at Skipton Auction Mart.

Having said that, it was all in aid of charity and the lamb was sold no less than four times!
The occasion was the second annual charity show and sale (Wed, Dec 10) organised by Addingham & District Sheep Breeders’ Association in aid of Manorlands, the Sue Ryder Care Hospice at Oxenhope.
A total of 33 Mule wether lambs – a wether lamb would normally sell at around £50 - were donated for sale by association members and other local farmers.
The show champion was exhibited by Joe Throup, of Berwick Intake Farm, Draughton, and received a trophy presented by event sponsor Chris Pearson, Pearson Farm Supplies, West Marton.
Judges were James Dewhurst, of Lothersdale, and Les Thackray, of Mickley, Ripon, one of the single biggest buyers of sheep at Skipton.
Auctioneer Ted Ogden first sold the title winner for £550 to Les Thackray, who donated it back for re-sale, as did three other “purchasers” – sponsor Chris Pearson at £400, John Turner, Draughton, at £200, and Bill Bland, Kirkby Malham, at £180. The champion eventually found a home when knocked down for £120 to Anabelle Sugden, Dobfield Farm, Laycock.
Along with the sale of all other lambs, a bottle of whisky donated by Alec Wade, Bradley, which made £180 after being sold six times, plus spontaneous donations on the day, the event netted a total of more than £3,400, compared to just over £2,000 at last year’s inaugural charity show.
Addingham & District Sheep Breeders’ Association chairman John Mawson was delighted with the result. He said: “Despite the current hard times in the economy, once again the farming community has shown its generosity and raised a fantastic amount for this worthy cause.“
Manorlands Hospice Fundraiser Andrew Wood was present at the sale and thanked all involved. “Manorlands cares for 650 local people each year and we would not be able to continue our vital services without the support of organisations such as Addingham Sheep Breeders, Pearson Farm Supplies, Craven Cattle Marts and the generous farming community," he said.
