New Charolais Sire Joins Genus ABS stud

Elgin Columbo is the latest Charolais bull to join the Genus ABS Beef sires portfolio, as a joint venture with the British Charolais Cattle Society.

Columbo was specifically selected for the dairy sector, he is within the breed’s top 5% for calving ease with a calving ease direct EBV of +8.8, and he is within the breed’s top 10% on Terminal Index (TI) for cross breeding purposes. Bred by the Milne family, of Kennies Hillock, Lhanbryde, Elgin, Morayshire, Columbo is by Harestone Uruguy, who is also within the breed’s top 5% for calving ease.

“The British Charolais Cattle Society has worked closely with Genus ABS and with help of the Breedplan database, we have selected a bull primarily for the dairy herd, and also beef heifers with specific complementary high EBVs for ease of calving and positive eye muscle area,” explains its chairman, Iain Millar. “We are confident that Columbo will help dairy producers to meet the huge market demand for added value Charolais cross calves.”

Arwel Owen, UK beef sales development director for Genus ABS said: “We are very excited about this joint venture with the British Charolais Cattle Society. It’s our first initiative of its kind and has been very interesting working with the society to identify easy calving bloodlines which will add to the line up of the Genus ABS Beef stud.”
