RASE Made the Right Decision on Royal Show
2009-Apr-06

The Tenant Farmers Association has commended the Trustees of the Royal Agricultural Society of England on making the very difficult but nevertheless correct decision to bring to an end the Royal Show in its current format.

TFA National Chairman Greg Bliss said “We have always said that the RASE is so much more than just the Royal Show. However, it has been the shop window through which the RASE has been viewed for a long number of years. In recent years when the Royal Show has been suffering as an event it has, unfairly, reflected badly on the society. It is time that people recognised the tremendous work that is done by the RASE through its other activities including the Practice to Science Group, FACE and the Arthur Rank Centre with which the TFA continues to be closely involved.”

“It is the case that the Royal has suffered in recent years from animal disease outbreaks and poor weather coinciding with the show. However, with the growing success of a broad range of specialist technical events within the show calendar and the diminishing time available to farm operators to attend off farm events, it was inevitable that the Royal Show would suffer. With the declining farming footfall at the show, the TFA decided after the 2007 show that we would not exhibit again at the event, concentrating instead on technical events which remain popular with the farming community. However, having made that decision we were keen to ensure that the Trustees of the society were aware of our ongoing support for the RASE as a whole,” said Mr Bliss.

“We look forward to working with the RASE as it seeks to refocus its vision to be an independent charitable organisation of national and international standing dedicated to agriculture, land management, the well-being of rural communities and to shaping a strong rural economy,” said Mr Bliss.
