Skipton Gears Up for 2009 Northern Limousin Extravaganza
2009-Apr-09

The Northern Limousin Extravaganza 2009 will be staged at Craven Cattle Marts’ Skipton Auction Mart, on Wednesday, May 13. A prize fund of more than £2,000 is on offer.

The inaugural event at Skipton in May, 2007, saw over 50 young, up-and-coming Limousins enter the show arena. North Wales breeder Jim Hollingsworth, of Afonwen, Mold, secured the championship with an 11-month-old three-quarters Limousin heifer “Katherine,” which went on to secure the interbreed championship at Otley the same year.

Another heifer, “Tomschoice Bethan,” the Skipton pedigree and reserve show champion, from James Cooper, of Tomschoice Limousins, Dacre, Harrogate, progressed to become reserve junior female champion at the Royal and also landed first prize at that year’s Great Yorkshire Show and champion exhibitor-bred junior female.

Unfortunately, Bluetongue restrictions prevented the event, organised jointly by Craven Cattle Marts and The North East Limousin Breeders Club, from going ahead in 2008.

However, hopes are high that this year’s renewal will see an increase in entry numbers for what is already a substantial show, all set to be a highlight of the northern Limousin calendar.

The primary aim of the high profile fixture is to showcase juvenile Limousins born in 2008 in a mart that provides a safe and secure environment in which to show cattle, many of which are entering the exhibition arena for the first time.

Likewise, the event also provides a suitable environment for breeders who do not normally show to be able to ‘have a go.’

While the main aim is to have a ‘fun day out,’ competition at the inaugural show was still serious and is likely to be so in 2009, with some very high quality stock due to be entered.

Pedigree classes will again be split down by age, allowing animals that are younger than those often seen at shows to be given a chance to shine. Entries for 2008-born commercial steers and heifers sired by a Limousin will be broken down by weight on the day.

The show will again take place on the same day as Skipton’s “Red Pedigree Event” for pedigree Limousin breeding cattle – it is anticipated that 1,500 store and commercial cattle will pass through the ring that day.

It forms part of the mart’s increasingly popular annual Pedigree Beef season, which begins with “Blue Wednesday” on April 29, the annual show and sale of pedigree British Blue breeding bulls, cows and heifers.

Northern Limousin Extravaganza classes – show judge is Mac Murphy, from Ireland - are:

Pedigree:
1 - Heifer, born in 2008 (classes to be split into equal sizes by age)
2 - Bull, born in 2008 (classes to be split into equal sizes by age)

Crossbred:
4 - Heifer born in 2008 sired by a Limousin (to be split by weight on the day)
5 - Steer born in 2008 sired by a Limousin (to be split by weight on the day).
