All Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships
2009-07-31

The All Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships held at Clogher Valley Show, Northern Ireland, (July 29 2009) attracted a top drawer entry to the venue with almost 100 cattle forward, making it the biggest judging competition in the 2009 calendar to date for the region.

All Ireland National Aberdeen-Angus champion and Clogher Valley Show interbreed champion Knoackadrinan Bell from Tom Reynolds.

Knoackadrinan Bell

All eyes were on the Angus ring from early morning as Society President William McLaren Junior swiftly made his placings in front of a captivated audience.

Taking the overall championship was a stunning and incredibly stylish four month old heifer Knoackadrinan Bell J460 by Knockdrinan Precise G398 out of Knockadrinan Bell A190. She was out on just her second show outing of the year having previously won the Provincial Cup at Longford Show. Today was a complete shock and delight for owner Tom who has been showing since 1954 and has won Carrick on Shannon some 14 times.

After tapping out his champion William McLaren said: "This was a cracking champion, she has the makings of a great female and is incredibly stylish. She caught my eye from the minute she stepped in to the ring. Overall the standard of cattle at the show was outstanding, but this heifer just had a real sparkle about her. She was an easy winner with a great top line, carcass potential and femininity."

Going one stage further, the heifer then took the overall interbreed championship under judge and Limousin breeder Harry Emslie, Peterhead, Aberdeen.

Mr Emslie said: “This young calf oozed style and was an easy champion for me. She is an incredibly correct calf with a wonderful future ahead of her.”

Taking reserve champion in the Aberdeen-Angus classes was James Porter, Lisburn, with his homebred April 2004 born Old Glenort Black Bianca. This one is by Haymount Wessurd out of Black Bianca of Gilkey. Mr McLaren described his reserve as: "A good working young cow with a cracking calf at foot. She has great lines and a superb udder and walks with great ease in the show ring."

Commercial Beef Champion:

Fighting off incredibly tough competition in the commercial beef classes at Clogher Valley Show was an outstanding Aberdeen-Angus x Belgian Blue heifer "Black Beauty 1" from James Alexander, Co Antrim.

This twin heifer born January this year is sired by a Lissduff bred bull from Leo McEnroe and has already taken a first prize ticket at Omagh Show. She is out of a Belgian Blue x Simmental who was the first animal ever shown by Mr Alexander.

This is Mr Alexander’s sixth commercial championship this year, but judging by the standard of commercial stock at the show it was one that meant a hell of a lot to him. “I’m absolutely delighted to have won today as the competition was so tough. She’s a fantastic heifer and I hope she will go on and do great things.”

Taking a liking to Black Beauty, interbreed judge and pedigree and commercial cattle breeder Harry Emslie, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, later bought the heifer for an undisclosed price and plans to show her later this year at the Scottish Winter Fair.
