Cumbrian exhibitor Anne Story wrote her own success story when clinching both supreme and reserve championship honours at the fourth annual National Progeny Show for pedigree and commercial Beltex sheep organised by The Northern Beltex Club at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Aug 8)

Mrs Story, from Hobbiesburn, Longtown, Carlisle, lifted the title with an aged ewe, Borderesk Libra, by the sire Airyolland Galliano. The victor was also champion at this year’s Skelton Show and part of the 1st prize group of three at the 2009 Great Yorkshire Show, where Mrs Story won many other prizes with her Beltex show team.
Her reserve champion was a shearling gimmer, Borderesk Malteaser, whose twin sister will be on sale at the National Progeny Show’s follow-up event at Skipton, the Beltex Sheep Society’s ninth annual production show and sale of pedigree rams and females, on Saturday, September 12.
Mrs Story capped a good day by also sending out both the champion and reserve champion male. The former, Borderesk Mad Hatter, another product of Airyolland Galliano, is also lined up for next month’s Skipton sale.
The commercial lambs section was again dominated by husband and wife breeders, Martin and Val Brown, of Beechwood House Farm, Newton-le-Willows, Bedale.
The couple were responsible for the supreme champion butchers lambs for the second year in succession. They also lifted the title at the inaugural National Progeny Show in 2006, as well as becoming reserve champions in 2007.
This year’s reserve champion butchers lambs came from Eli Tattersall, of Oakdale, Darwen, Blackburn. They were sired by a tup bred by Beltex stalwart David Findlay, of Coverham, Leyburn.
Main show judge was Sara Morris, Hay on Wye, Herefordshire, with the commercial lambs section judged by Hamish Currie, Carlisle.
Northern Beltex Club chairman Robert Garth and secretary Kelly Armitage said the show, which attracted 30 exhibitors and 200 sheep, proved extremely successful and augured well for the September sale at Skipton.
