NI National Charolais Show Attracts Quality Entry
2009-09-08

Northern Ireland Charolais breeders turned out one of their best entries of more than 100 pedigree and commercial cattle at Fintona on Friday 4 September 2009 at their National Charolais Show where pedigree section judge, Peter Donger, of the Towcester based Seawell herd made his female awards to Gilbert Crawford, of Maghera and the top male title to Will Short, Omagh.

Female champion, Coolnaslee Countess with Omagh District Council’s Paddy McGowen; BCCS president, Stuart Bothwell, Gilbert Crawford and handler, Sam Miliken.

Coolnaslee Countess

Mr Crawford was claiming the supreme female title for the second consecutive year, this time with Coolnaslee Countess, an Allanfauld Superscot daughter who was no stranger to the ring having scooped the Dectomax sponsored senior female championship at Clogher Valley last month. Standing below her in the reserve female championship position was her herd mate, Coolnaslee Diane, another Superscot daughter who was placed Dectomax intermediate heifer champion in the Dectomax final.

Male champion, Woodpark Diamond with handler Moses Irwin
and judge, Peter Donger.

Woodpark Diamond

Heading the male section was Will Short’s Woodpark Diamond, a 12 month old bull, sired by Rumsden Tsar, who was making his showring debut. The reserve male title went to Sunnydene Douglas, a 17 month old Allanfauld Superscot son, out of Windmill Vivienne, and bred by A Crane. Douglas was exhibited by Harold Stubbs, Lisbellaw and his grandson, Andrew Burleigh.

Commercial champion, Bush Mills Bad Boy with Ben Sinnamon of sponsors, Fane Valley Co-op and judge, Ian Anderson.

Bush Mills Bad Boy
The commercial Charolais sired section was judged by noted cattle breeder Ian Anderson who had travelled over from Ayrshire. He awarded his supreme Charolais commercial championship to Bushmills Bad Boy, a March born steer exhibited jointly by McAfee Brothers and James Alexander of Randalstown, Antrim, while standing in the reserve championship place was Laddy, a 14 month old steer from Oliver Loughran, Cookstown.
