Verity Mashams Double at Skipton
2009-09-15

David and Roland Verity, of W&R Verity, Grange Farm, Bouthwaite, Ramsgill, achieved a quick-fire double when exhibiting the winning pen of 40 at the annual prize show for Masham wethers, which formed part of the September sale of store lambs at Skipton Auction Mart. (Wed, Sept 9).

Masham wethers
Two days earlier, the Veritys had sent out the champion pen of Mashams and overall reserve champions at Skipton’s monthly prime lamb show.

Their prize-winning wethers, awarded the Craven Cattle Marts Trophy, sold for the class-topping top price of £49 per head to Michael Spensley, Elslack, who also acquired the third prize pen from Ken Lister, Kettlewell, for £43.50 each.

The second prize pen from Kevin Wilson, Blubberhouses, made £45.50 a head when acquired by Mark Thompson, Long Preston. Show judge was Ernest Harker, Appleby.

Robust trading levels for store lambs were achieved, with demand for long-keep sheep particularly strong. There was total clearance of the 8,334 lambs forward, which averaged £47.15 per head overall (£39.25 in 2008).

They sold to a high on the day of £89.50 for a pen of Texel-cross lambs from WE & A Booth, Feizor, Settle, bought by Warwick Gill, Melton Mowbray.
