A strong commercial demand for Limousin bulls, which saw averages rise slightly on the year, was the story behind a solid trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Perth Bull Sale through United Auctions held at the newly completed Stirling Agricultural Centre on Monday 19th October 2009.
Goldies Black Denver - 12,600gns

A 74% clearance saw 61 bulls go under the hammer to average £4509 with 20 bulls in all selling for 5,000gns or more.
Topping the trade was the May 2008 born black Limousin bull, Goldies Black Denver, exhibited by Bruce Goldie, Townfoot Farm, Mouswald, Dumfries when selling to Mr H Emslie, Kinknockie, Mintlaw, Peterhead, Aberdeen for his Emslies herd of 60 pedigree cows. Denver is by Normande Arapaho (18,000gns Carlisle February 2007), an Ionesco grandson, and out of the dam Goldies Toronto and is the first son to go through the sale ring. Breeder Bruce Goldie said: “Goldies Denver combines black and polled genetics with outstanding performance and carries a Beef Value of LM+49 putting him easily into the Top 1% of breed.” New owner Harry Emslie added: “He is extremely well bred and out of the same female line (Dutchess Olivia) as Bailea Black BMW which I purchased for 25,000gns at Perth in February 2008. Such is the demand for commercial females sold in calf to a black Limousin, that it has given me the confidence to buy another black bull.”
This represents the top price to date at Perth for the noted Goldies herd which had previously sold Goldies Thunderbolt for 12,000gns in October 2003. Thunderbolt was Champion Animal as well as top price on the day and was the first of three Perth titles for the Goldies in the post-FMD era. Goldies Denver also represents the highest figure achieved by breeder Bruce Goldie for a black Limousin bull.
Purchasing the next leading price, Millington Director, at 9,500gns was Swalesmoor Farms, Allerbeck Farm, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfries. Exhibited by Millington Grange Estate, Cold Skin Farm, Millington, Yorkshire Millington Director was Senior Reserve Champion in the pre-sale Show judged by Mr Gary Swindlehurst, Procters Farms Ltd, Slaidburn, Lancs and another with a terrific Beef Value of LM+43. An embryo calf, he is by the French sire, Neuf and out of the Mas du Clo daughter, Superbe, whose mother is sired by Genial giving Millington Director muscle, growth and milkiness. This was the top price to date at Perth/Stirling for the Millington prefix which is well known in Scottish circles having previously exhibited the Highland Show Champion Millington Tangerine in 2006.

Next best at 8,000gns was the Overall Champion Ballyrobin Drambuie brought out by Miss J Gilliland, The Grove, Ballyrobin Rd, Antrim, N Ireland. Clearly delighted, Joan Gilliland - whose Ballyrobin Herd comprises 10 pedigree cows - said she was very proud and honoured to have bred the first Champion at the new Stirling Mart. January 2008 born, Ballyrobin Drambuie is by Ryedale Paragon and out of Ballyrobin Ventara whose dam, Robbstown Isobelle, had bred Ballyrobin Muller, the 1997 Perth Reserve Intermediate Champion sold for 10,000gns. Buyers were Housebay Farms, Housebay, Stornsay, Orkney.
Moonleaze Dominator, brought out by Mr & Mrs S Irvine, Braehead, Drummuir, By Keith, Banffs made 8,000gns when knocked down to Messrs G&G Mair, Meikleholm, Lockerbie, Dumfries. Bred by JJ & BD Comer, New Moonleaze Farm, Braydon, Swindon, Wilts, this rising 21 month old bull is by the Sympa son, Bernish Alfy, and out of the Haltcliffe Hercules daughter, Lumbylaw Pegleg and carries a Beef Value of LM+44.
The same purchaser bought the first of two bulls from the prolific herd of Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Cumbria at 6,500gns. This was for the Intermediate Champion and Reserve Overall, Haltcliffe Duke, March 2008 born with the full French breeding of Sympa (sire) and Rolande (dam) and with a Beef Value of LM+32. Haltcliffe Dick, the Reserve Junior Champion then went under the hammer for 7,500gns to Chas McMillan, Ardbeg Farm, Port Ellen, Isle of Islay. Again sired by Sympa, he is out of the Broadmeadows Cannon daughter, Ronick Red, and carries an identical Beef Value of LM+32. The Ridleys had previously exhibited a Junior Champion at Perth (the 10,000gns Haltcliffe President) with the Stirling Sale following a successful auction at Carlisle on the Saturday where they had sold bulls to 8,000gns.
Another exhibitor with sales success coming hard on the heels of Carlisle - where he had sold bulls at 9,000gns and 7,200gns respectively - was Stuart Fotheringham, Ballinloan, Dunkeld, Perthshire. Here he sold Ballinloan Darious, a January 2008 born son of Killerton Travis and out of Ballinloan Underpants for 7,000gns to W McLaren & Sons, Long Carse, Alloa. Mr Fotheringham runs a 60-cow herd and has a previous Perth Junior Champion to his name in the shape of the 10,000gns Ballinloan Rascal.
Lodge Dannyboy also hit 7,000gns on behalf of WI & AW Callion, Bolfornought Farm, Stirling when snapped up by Mr A McLaren, Classlochie Farm, Kinross. Dannyboy is an eighteen month old bull sired by Saphir and out of the homebred dam, Lodge Tania and sports a Beef Value of LM+26.
Two bulls made 6,500gns. Glenlivet Disco, the Intermediate Reserve Champion from D&R Durno & Sons, Auchorachan, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch, Banff, is by Homebyres Visitor and out of Glenlivet Okaydokay and heads to Hamilton Farmers, Phantassie, East Linton, E Lothian and represented their highest price at Perth to date. Kinnahaird David from JP Clark Ltd, Kinnahaird Farm, Contin, Strathpeffer is an AI son of Grahams Unbeatable and out of Allanfauld Saffron and was sold with a Beef Value of LM+32 to MJ MacTaggart, Uiskentuie Farm, Bridgend, Isle of Islay, again at 6,500gns. The Junior Champion, Maraiscote Davro, from Ian Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Newmains, Wishaw made 5,000gns to DR McIntyre, Glenmoy/Kinrive & Glencul, Kirriemuir, Angus.
Speaking after the Sale, Iain Kerr, British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive said: “Limousin-sired animals are consistently achieving the best return for farmers in both the breeding and prime rings, and it is this success which is behind the strong commercial demand for Limousin bulls and continues to drive the breed forward. Limousin bulls are best placed to deliver what the market wants in terms of efficiency, conformation and ease of management and this has been clearly reflected in the October sales round where a total of 204 bulls - 40 more on the year - have gone under the hammer at Carlisle and Perth in recent days at an average of £5369 to gross in excess of £1 Million.”
