New Year’s Day Baby Comes of Age at Skipton Suckled Calves Show

A 2009 New Year’s Day ‘baby girl’ took top honours on her first public appearance when chosen as champion at the annual show and sale of suckled calves and 2008-born store cattle at Skipton Auction Mart. (Wed, Oct 28)

The home-bred British Blue-cross heifer, born on January 1 this year, from Peter Fawcett, of TW and IM Fawcett & Son, Mearbeck, Long Preston, was first chosen as the pick of her age group, before being given the nod as overall victor by judge Ben Townsend, of Laneshawbridge.

Ben then transferred his interest to the sales ring when acquiring his chosen champion for £1,100. She is by the Fawcetts’ stock bull, which has been breeding successfully for five or six years – his offspring normally find their way to Skipton store sales.

Top price in show fell to the 1st prize 2008-born steer and reserve champion from JV Fox, of Withgill, Clitheroe, which travelled east when joining HM Roe, Barrow-on-Humberside, for £1,220.

The same buyer also paid £980 for the 2nd prize heifer from John Stockdale & Sons, Oat Croft Farm, Burnsall, champions at last year’s corresponding fixture.

Two youngsters sold for £970 – the 3rd prize heifer from James Garth & Son, Keasden, Clapham, which joined Geoff Burrow, Kirkby Malham, and the 2nd prize bullock from Steven Priestley, Denholme, acquired by J Matten, Thirsk.
