Hinchliffe’s Pies Supreme at Great Northern Pork Pie Fest
2009-12-03

Farm shops run by Kirklees butchers Hinchliffe’s clinched top honours in the inaugural Great Northern Pork Pie Fest, a brand-new pie-making competition run by Craven Cattle Marts.

Kelly Armitage, from Pole Moor, Huddersfield, receives the Great Northern Pork Pie Fest supreme champion pork pie trophy on behalf of Hinhcliffe’s from Moule Media’s company secretary Jacqui Smeeton.

Hinchliffe’s established farm shop at Sunnyside Farm, Netherton, Huddersfield, saw its prize-winning traditional pork pie go on to be crowned supreme champion pie.

The business’s Bolster Moor Farm Shop at Harden Road Farm, Golcar, newly opened last month (Nov), was also responsible for the first prize stand pie, which then progressed to take the reserve supreme pork pie championship. For good measure, Hinchliffe’s Netherton shop was also runner-up in the stand pie class.

The business is no stranger to success in the meat industry awards arena. Hinchliffe’s traditional pork pies have landed the championship at the Pork Pie Appreciation Society’s annual contest in Ripponden, Halifax, on five separate occasions.

In addition, the business’s stand pies have twice won the supreme championship at the county’s premier contest for butchers, the Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products Competition, run by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, along with four national product evaluation championship successes over the years.

There were special prizes at Skipton for the best pork pies from both Yorkshire and Lancashire, as organisers sought to foster cross-border competition and friendly Roses rivalry! Bolster Moor Farm Shop’s stand pie was also deemed the best of the White Rose entries, while Red Rose honours fell to Whitesides Butchers in Colne,

“It’s yet another feather in our cap to gain a clean sweep of the major honours in the first-ever Great Northern Pork Pie Fest and we’ll be back to defend our title next year,” said Hinchliffe’s Simon Haigh, who became the first recipient of a trophy sponsored by Skipton-based PR company Moule Media.

Butchers shops from Yorkshire and Lancashire entered the launch competition, which was staged alongside the high profile Christmas prime stock shows and sales at Skipton Auction Mart, the region’s premier event for butchers looking to source quality, locally reared prime beef and lamb for Christmas. (Sun, Nov 29).

Bentley’s Butchers, of Pudsey, also figured strongly, presenting the second and third prize traditional pork pies and the third placed stand pie.

Highly commended awards also went to other butcher exhibitors - Drake & Macefield and Farmouse Fayre, both based in Skipton, Ellisons, Cullingworth, Lunds, Keighley, Whitesides, Colne, Hewlets, Garstang, Hansons, Nelson, George Middlemiss & Son, Otley, Illingworths, East Keswick, Pearsons, Ingleton, and Ingfield Farm Shop, Southowram, Halifax.

Each individual entry was judged by a ten-strong panel of pie experts and aficionados, with the supreme championship adjudicated by Mike Ward, of Stables Butchers, Keighley, president of the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders. Local farmer John Turner, of Draughton, was also co-sponsor of the competition.

All entrants brought along extra pork pies to be auctioned in aid of Manorlands, the Sue Ryder hospice at Oxenhope. It raised a total of £913, with the champion pie knocked down for a heady £75 to James Garth, of Keasden, who had earlier in the day sent out the Skipton Christmas prime lamb champions.

A giant charity pie made and donated specially for the competition by Peter Middlemiss, of George Middlemiss & Son Butchers, of Otley, sold for £100 to Craven Cattle Marts chairman Michael McKenzie, of Arncliffe.
