The victor – the sire is from the Midlock flock of John Wight & Sons, based at Crawford, Biggar - sold for £450 to David Lodge, Otley, who last autumn landed his first Bluefaced Leicester title at Skipton in the annual multi-breed show and sale of pedigree and pure-bred rams and females.

Ashley Caton also sold a second gimmer hogg for £420 to Cumbrian buyer Gordon Allen, Kirkby Stephen.

Top call at £500 fell to a gimmer hogg from John and Claire Mason, Oddacres, Embsay. Bred from a ram standing with the Smearsett flock of WA and A Booth, Austwick, it sold to a Mr Thomas, from Llandrindod Wells in Powys, Wales.

The best in-lamb Bluefaced Leicester and reserve show champion came from Lancashire showman John Stott, of Laund Farm, Chipping, Preston. Judge was Richard Ellis, Addingham Moorside.

The show formed part of the regular sale of store and breeding sheep, which attracted a 1,150-strong entry, with in-lamb Swaledale ewes selling to a high of £129.
