Craven Limousin Day a Highlight of Skipton Pedigree Beef Season
2010-04-29

The countdown is on to Craven Limousin Day at Skipton Auction Mart, on Wednesday, May 12 - a high profile double-header featuring the annual show and sale of pedigree breeding bulls and females, and the 2010 Northern Limousin Extravaganza.

Some of the Steven and Ruth Priestley’s quality Brontemoor entries in Skipton’s 2010 show and sale of pedigree breeding bulls and females.

A turnout of 98 quality cattle is anticipated for the Limousin sale, including major stock reduction consignments from two of the region’s leading breeders.

Steven and Ruth Priestley, of Hill Top Farm, Denholme, Bradford, have entered 31 cattle from their renowned Brontemoor herd, while the noted Oddacres herd of John and Claire Mason will be represented by 18 Limousins.

This is seen a major coup for Skipton and a boost to the mart’s growing reputation as an increasingly important venue for pedigree Limousin cattle.

Due to stock numbers now on the farm, the Brontemoor sale offering, predominantly females, will be four cows with calves at foot, two in-calf heifers, three bulling heifers, 14 maiden heifers and four bulls.

The Brontemoor herd is now made up of mainly home-bred females - only four purchased cows remain - put to bulls selected from some of the best Limousin genetics.

Many of the females are bred from renowned bloodlines, among them Haltcliffe Egidius (by Broadmeadows Cannon), Haltcliffe Olympus (by Greenwell Major), Glenrock OJ (by Marquis), Procters Subaru (by Heros & Marnhull Jojo), Sultan (by Jersey) and Seaview Upstart (by Ocean).

The cattle to be offered for sale at Skipton have been sired by Egidius, Olympus, Sultan, Procters Subaru and Seaview Upstart, along with Glenrock Spartacus (Kype Interrogate), Doonbeg Andrew (Rocky), and Elite Ben (Nenuphar). The herd, which is in is in a 4-year TB testing area, is now also using the Umpire son Burndale Cyclone, purchased at Carlisle for 14,000gns.

The Oddacres herd is predominantly based on imported French cattle, sourced from many of the best herds in the original home of the Limousin. Two cows with calves at foot, one in-calf cow, six maiden heifers and six bulls will appear in the Skipton ring.

Among the beefy bloodlines will be Oddacres Daphne, sired by Victor-Ben, out of a Saphir (Champerval) daughter. Her grand dam Sapho is the best cow in the Oddacres herd.

One of the favourite young bulls forward at the sale is the 13-month-old Oddacres Edward, by Usant - full brother to the famous Nenuphar. Edward’s dam is again an excellent combination of Champerval bloodlines - Nectar, Junior and Domino.

Also on the same day, one of the highlights of the northern calendar, the show-only Limousin Extravaganza, is organised jointly by Craven Cattle Marts and the North East Limousin Breeders Club. It provides an opportunity for breeders to exhibit 2009-born juvenile Limousins that are entering the exhibition arena for the first time in a safe and secure environment.

Last year’s supreme champion, Millington Davina, a 14-month-old pedigree heifer from Millington Grange Estate, east of York, went on to land the 2009 Royal Show Limousin championship and the junior championship at the Great Yorkshire Show, before selling for 28,000gns at the Carlisle Red Ladies fixture in December.

This year’s entries will be competing for a total prize fund of over £2,000 following support from over 20 sponsors. Judge is Irishman James Wycherley, from Cork.

Craven Limousin Day forms an integral part of Skipton Auction Mart’s 2010 pedigree beef season, a series of three prestigious midweek shows, which began this week with “Blue Wednesday,” (Apr 28) the annual show and sale of pedigree British Blue breeding bulls, cows and heifers, with bulls particularly suited to pedigree or commercial beef and dairy herds.

The season culminates on Wednesday, May 26, with another double-header, the Ling Fields Beef Cattle Fair. First up is the annual multi-breed show and sale of pedigree beef breeding cattle and Spring breeding bulls, with classes for both bulls and females, followed by Blue Ladies Day, the annual show and sale of pedigree British Blue females. Entries for both close on Monday, May 10.
