Carlisle Charolais Bulls Peak at 26,000gns

Charolais bulls met a solid commercial trade selling to a top of 26,000gns in Carlisle on Saturday 8 May, at the breed society’s spring show and sale.

Junior and reserve supreme champion,
Anside Excalibur at 26,000gns

Trade topper at 26,000gns was the day’s junior and reserve supreme champion, Anside Excalibur TI +28, SRI +37, a 16 month old from Martin Irvine, Drummuir, Keith who was making his debut in Carlisle. Excalibur was the first son in the ring of the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger and he was out of a Darshams bred cow by Moyness Rendezvous, a member of the winning Burke trophy team. He went to join Gareth Jones’ Esgob herd at Cwmtirmynach, Bala.

Next at 9,000gns was Wesley Duran TI +34, SRI +40, an 18 month old Balthayock Aesop son and out of a Maerdy Rock sired homebred cow. Bred by Wesley Estates, Markfield, Leicester he sold to JM Cant and Partners, Arbirlot, Arbroath.

Two first class prize winners were each bid to 8,000gns. First to go was the 16 month old Bassett Earl from Jean Atkinson, Thorpe Bassett, Malton to W and JA Longlands, Wark, Hexham. Earl was by the 16,000gns Balmyle Vagabond and out of a homebred cow by Barleyfields Leonard.

The second 8,000gns bid went to Hallbankgate Embark TI+46, SRI +50, the highest performance recorded bull forward in the sale and from father and son team, Tom and Ian Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton. This 14 month old was by the 9,000gns Moelfre Ambassador and out of a homebred cow by Edenhurst Pioneer. Embark went to join one of Cumbria’s largest suckler herds owned by Greystoke Castle Farms, Greystoke, Penrith.

The senior male champion, the 21 month old Rumsden Docklands TI +24, SRI +30 made 7,000gns to C MacIver, Kinloss, Forres. Bred by Rupert Taylor, Fairwarp, Uckfield, Docklands was a Doonally New son and out of a homebred cow going back to Doonally Prince.

Another Doonally New son, this time Rumsden Eros from the same exhibitor found himself in the final line ups and was awarded the reserve junior championship. Eros was a 14 month old out of a homebred dam by Enfield Plexus, and he sold to Jones-Davies and Sons, Boughrood, Brecon for one of the day’s four, 5,000gns bids.

Ravensworth Damien, an 18 month old Balthayock Nougat son and out of a Wiggington bred cow by Maerdy Sundance commanded a second 7,000gns call. Bred by Ouston Farms, Gateshead, Damien sold to DR Stacey, Bugle, St Austell.

Two lots shared a 6,200gns price tag. First to sell was first class winner, Hendy Dick TI +23, SRI +29, a 17 month old Tullygarley Rollerball son and out of a Doonally New sired homebred cow from Wyn and Diane Rees, Llangurig, Llanidloes. The buyer was JE Woodman and Son, Great Chesters, Haltwhistle.

The second 6,200gns bid was made by EH and IJ Smith, West Bolton, Alnwick for Thrunton Delamitri TI +34, SRI +33, a 17 month old from the Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin, Thrunton, Alnwick. Delamitri was by the 22,000gns Newhouse Bigal and out of a homebred cow by the 20,000gns Moncur General.

A bid of 6,000gns secured Caylers Diplomat TI +24, SRI +29, for CG Greig Farms, Gateside, Cupar. Bred and exhibited by David and Louise Barker, Nuthampstead, Royston, this 20 month old was by Okapibb and out of a homebred cow by Oscar.

Another Okapibb son from the Barkers, this time the 16 month old Caylers Earl TI +22, SRI +21, a first class winner whose dam went back to Killadeas Major, made 5,500gns to RH Thompson and Son, Newfield Bishop Auckland.

A second 6,000gns call was made later in the day by MAJ Jarrold, Nelson, Treharris, Glamorgan for the 18 month old Goldies Dynamic from Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, Dumfries. Dynamic was by Goldies Vicechancellor, full brother to the 34,000gns Perth supreme champion, Goldies Uppermost and out of a homebred dam by Oldstone Egbert.

Next at 5,800gns was Elgin Electric TI +33, SRI +37 from the Milne family, Llanbryde, Elgin to PR Sawyer and Son, Goodmanham, York. Electric was a 16 month old by Harestone Tyrol and out of a homebred cow by Mortimers Roselier. Minutes later another January 2009 born Tyrol son, this time Elgin Elvis TI +42, SRI +46 was knocked down sold for 4,800gns to Peter and Sheilagh Donger, Foxley, Towcester.

The reserve senior champion title went to Haymount Disciple, a rising two year old from J and W Arnott, Kelso. Disciple was by the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort and out of a homebred dam going back to the 28,000gns Maerdy Primeminister. He was knocked down sold for 5,500gns to Courance Farms, Courance, Lockerbie.

Three more entries shared a 5,000gns price tag. First was Logan Dynamite, a rising two year old from WL Hyslop and Son, West Logan, Castle Douglas. Sired by the homebred Logan Amazon who goes back to Killadeas Jack and out of a homebred dam, the buyers were Stewart and Paterson, Sandilands, Lanark.

Klondyke Farms, Moniaive, Thornhill forked out the next 5,000gns for Gretnahouse Dudec TI +25, SRI +32, from Alasdair Houston, Gretna Green. This 20 month old was by the 20,000gns Moncur General and out of an Oldstone Egbert sired homebred cow.

Derrylamogue Derry, a 17 month old bred by Eamonn Flanagan and offered by N and A McCrea, Coagh, Tyronne, collected the reserve intermediate championship and made 5,000gns to Messrs Pawson, Blackburn. Derry was by Cloonfad Axel and out of a Durrow bred cow going back to Liscally lines.

Rupert Taylor led the female section at 4,200gns with the first prize winner, Rumsden Viva TI +24, SRI +27, a six year old Doonally New daughter sold in calf to Thrunton Voldemort and accompanied by her nine month old heifer at foot, Rumsden Erica, by Rumsden Cruiserweight. The buyer was D Smith, Mauchline, Ayr.

Next at 4,000gns was Holstead Delightful TI +41, SRI +46, a 21 month old maiden heifer by Dingle Hofmeister and out of a Doonally New sired homebred cow from the Andrews family, Freddie, June and daughter, Emma, of Holmfirth. She sold to the Butcher family, James, Simon and their father Stephen who are re-establising their Fleets herd at Rylestone, Skipton.

The Andrews also collected the supreme female championship with Holstead Debutante TI +20, SRI +24, a two year old heifer by Gretnahouse Noel, out of a homebred dam by Baggrave Minstrel and served to the 25,000gns Perth supremo, Goldies Unbeatable. Debutante was knocked down sold for 3,200gns to S McCann, Bettystown, County Meath.

The Campbell family was among the top female lots at 4,000gns with their Thrunton Bridie TI +20, SRI +30, a Burradon Talisman daughter with her first calf at foot, the six month old bull, Thrunton Ethan by the 22,000gns Newhouse Bigal. The buyer was ORP Jones, Tywyn, Gwynedd.

The event also featured a draft from Sandy Innes, Nairn based Moyness herd. Top lot at 4,000gns was Moyness Una TI +24, SRI +24, a Moyness Polonium daughter sold with her third calf at foot, Moyness Eiger, a nine month old bull by Gretnahouse Beachbum. The pair sold to R and R Weir, Cumnock, Ayr who secured a total of seven female lots including the next highest entry at 3,600gns, Moyness Ullala TI +22, SRI +24, another Polonium daughter with her fourth calf at foot, the nine month old Moyness Elegance, by Beachbum. A bid of 3,200gns secured Moyness Veronica for G Saunders, Bonvilson, Glamorgan. This Moyness Saltire daughter and out of a Maerdy Impeccable sired dam was sold with her third calf at foot, Moyness Erica, a six month old heifer by Edenhurst Cognac.
