Beef Shorthorns Command Strong Trade at Carlisle
2010-05-25

Beef Shorthorn cattle met a strong demand at the society’s special spring sale at Borderway Mart on Friday 21 May, where prices followed the prizes. The supreme champion bull, Annanwater Blair, topped the trade at 3,700gns while the leading priced female and reserve supreme was Lowther Magic 190, which made 2,500gns.

“Both bulls and females were in keen demand from the ringside, including interest from several new buyers, aware of the growing demand for Beef Shorthorn as the functional suckler cow that is easy to keep and suited to low input systems,” explained breed society secretary, Frank Milnes.

Annanwater Blair, sale leader at 3,700gns, was bred and consigned by Andy Ryder, Moffat, Dumfriesshire. A roan two-year-old, he was by Newfield Tarquin and out of a Llanarth dam. A late entry, he sparked interest amongst the buyers, eventually selling to A Greenwood, Trawden, Lancashire.

The 14-month-old Ballyart Legend from Limerick-based breeder Owen O’Neil, Brittas, sold for 3,500gns to MJA Ward and Daughters of Harwood Dale, Scarborough. Second to the top-priced Blair in his class, Legend was by Kilfrush Vantage 7 and out of Glenbally Aran.

Third place in the same class was the homebred Tofts Judgemental, which sold to Hampshire-based DR and MI Rutherford, Odiham for 2,800gns. One of just two entries from the Beef Shorthorn Society president, James Playfair-Hanney’s Tofts Kelso-based herd, the red Judgemental was by Tofts Captain and out of Tofts Joyful. His second lot, Tofts Beauty Princess, a roan Tofts Woden daughter sold with her fourth calf at foot, a two-month-old bull by Tofts Shoufler made 1,900gns to the Ward family.

A second bid of 2,800gns was made by WG and J Bradley of Long Preston, Skipton, for one of several consigned by breeders Andrew and Helen Tomkins of the Hethersgill, Carlisle-based Hallsford herd. Just over two years’ old, Hallsford Dustbuster 215 was sired by Blelack Dustbuster and is out of the consistent Hallsford Carnation, a dam with genes from both Glenisla and Chapleton.

The first placed female and reserve supreme also commanded the top female price of 2,500gns for breeder Charles Lowther of Armathwaite, Carlisle. Lowther Magic 190, sired by Uppermill Sherlock and out of the Glenisla Jacobite-sired Dunsyre Magic 3, was 22 months of age and had been running with LS Artic. The successful buyer was J Allison Farms of Appleton le Moors, Yorkshire, which also purchased the 2,100gns Ballard Ladybird Bluebell, a two-year-old heifer by Cairnsmore Xtreme Force and one of nine entries from the North Yorkshire-based Ballard herd of E Hugill, Great Broughton, Stokesley which went on to average £1,435.

Ousby, Penrith-based breeders, Andrew and Caroline Ivinson received a bid of 2,400gns for their yearling heifer, Sandwick Celtic Rose. By Redhill Xmoor and out of Ballard Park Royalty, she went to Annan-based Thomson Roddick and Laurie, which also purchased Albion Rosebud Beatrice. This white two-year-old received a bid of 1,850gns for vendor P Braithwaite of Stokesley, North Yorkshire.

Another purchase for J Allison Farms was the second-placed Sandwick Bountyful Tessa, also from the Ivinson’s and the last daughter of Croxtonpark Ken to be sold. She made 1,800gns.

Averages:

5 bulls £3,003.00
14 served and/or maiden heifers £1,422.75
2 cows £1,890.00
9 Ballard Herd draft £1,435.00
