That is to consider becoming a Nuffield Scholar. A Nuffield Scholarship is a great opportunity for enthusiastic people who have ideas for change. The scheme provides the chance of travelling the world to complete research, to bring back best practice examples to implement in the UK.

To generate this new thinking to advance the rural industry, the Nuffield Scholarship Trust will be holding an introductory talk for young agricultural entrepreneurs in conjunction with George F White and Farmway Ltd, on Friday 21st May 2010 at 1:00pm at Farmway’s Piercebridge Headquarters in County Durham.

A Nuffield Scholarship is open to anyone involved in farming, rural industry or the food chain, aged between 22 and 45 years old and who feel they want to look at the bigger picture on a worldwide scale. Pre-requisite qualifications are not required, candidates just need to have vision, enthusiasm and a determination to study a subject they feel passionate about. The two main objectives of the Nuffield Trust are to;

  1. Promote agriculture, horticulture, forestry and countryside management education in the UK and abroad
  2. To advance the standard of UK farming (including the food supply chain, horticulture, forestry and countryside management) through the provision of Scholarships enabling the study of practices and techniques employed anywhere in the world.

George F. White hope that by proactively introducing the Nuffield Scholarship Trust in Yorkshire and the North it will encourage people to consider entering for an award. Commenting Hugh Fell of George F. White said: "We know that we have a fantastic resource of potential scholars in the North East and Yorkshire we hope that some of these entrepreneurial farmers and agricultural business minded people will put themselves forward. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to take part in the unique ‘Nuffield experience’ that can bring great benefits to your business as well as for your own personal development. Many Nuffield Scholars have subsequently gone on to positively transform their industry sector. "

The afternoon will take the form of an informal lunch followed by a presentation from John Stones; the Trust Director on the ‘Nuffield experience’ and a presentation by Hugh Fell on current issues in the rural sector. There will also be chance to meet previous scholars as the event forms part of the Nuffield’s Arable Study Group tour.

A successful applicant will be provided with travel and subsistence costs for a period of eight weeks in return for a written paper and the presentation of study findings at its annual Winter Conference. Previous studied topics have included; ‘The profitable use of anaerobic digestion on UK farms’, ‘Agriculture in the school curriculum’, ‘Facilitating rural development’, and ‘Best practice in farm shop retailing’

The presentation will take place on Friday 21st May 2010 at 1:00pm at Farmway Ltd, Cock Lane, Piercebridge, Co. Durham, DL2 3TJ. Booking is essential, to reserve a place please contact Robert Moore at George F. White on 01665 603 231 or by e-mail robertmoore@georgefwhite.co.uk
