Opportunity to Farm 1,000 Acres in Mid-Wales
2010-05-21

A life changing and rare opportunity to take on a 1,000 acre organic livestock farm in mid Wales – recognised as a beacon of good farming practice - is offered by Balfours Property Professionals.

Cannon Farm, Llanerfyl, near Welshpool, comprises of 535 acres of upland hill grazing, together with 282 acres of improved pasture and 24 acres of hay meadow. The package also includes a four bedroom farmhouse and new portal steel frame buildings, ideal for cattle housing, together with an excellent indoor lambing system.

Balfours partner, Jonathan Lovegrove-Fielden explains: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person – someone who is bright, enthusiastic and will ultimately feel passionate about Cannon, what it has to offer – and, of course, what they can offer Cannon Farm. We are open minded as to the arrangement, whilst the owners would prefer a partnership, or to employ someone as a manager or a contractor, they would be prepared to consider a tenancy.”

The current farming partner, Nigel Elgar, is retiring after 22 years. Cannon’s farming system currently comprises of a highly successful flock of 500 recorded Welsh Hill Speckle faced ewes plus 110 ewe lamb replacements. The flock has been crossed with Eascare rams to introduce wool shedding. There are also small herds of pedigree Welsh Black suckler cows and Highland cows, from which stores and finished progeny are sold.

The farm is in the Tir Mynndd and Tir Gofal Agri-Environmental Schemes. “Cannon really is a beacon of good farming practice aligned to environmental drivers. Nigel Elgar has not only worked closely with the RSPB in its’ remit to increase the Black Grouse population in Wales, but also hosted educational visits as part of the Tir Gofal Scheme. He is also to be commended for developing strong relationships with leading agricultural colleges and University faculties,” adds Mr Lovegrove-Fielden.
