The Countryside Foundation for Education is a National Charity whose aim is to educate, inform and inspire children, parents and teachers, so that they can enjoy and appreciate the countryside while having a greater understanding of the wide range of issues surrounding it.
Their aims are mirrored by The Glendale Agricultural Society and the money will be used to assist children from first schools in Tyne & Wear to attend the June 10th event completely free of charge.
A cheque was presented at the CFE Countryside Live Day in Yorkshire when the Committee undertook a familiarisation visit funded by the National Park. Gary Richardson, CEO of the Countryside Foundation for Education said, “The Glendale Agricultural Society Children’s Day is the perfect introduction for children into the delights of the Northumbrian countryside.
We are delighted to be able to support children from across the region to experience a day they will never forget.” The CFE has been supported by the Community Foundation of Tyne and Wear and the donation will allow pupils and teachers from four first schools in that region to attend.
The Glendale Agricultural Society’s Children’s Countryside Day held near Wooler in Northumberland is one of the foremost rural educational events in the UK. During the past five years, over 8000 first school pupils have learnt about rural life and the importance of conserving the countryside completely free of charge.
Each year there are over 70 educational exhibits and activities. They include farm livestock; sheep shearing; goats being milked; plants and vegetables being sown and grown; bread-making; butchery; fly-fishing; archaeology; renewable energy and healthy recipes being cooked. The exhibitors talk to the children in small groups and the children are able to take part in activities and ask questions in an informal, fun and relaxed setting away from the classroom.
Sarah Nelson, GAS Project Manager and the inspiration behind this day said: “It is fantastic that a foundation that is dedicated to education feels that the Children’s Day is so worthwhile. Our trip to the Countryside Live event helped give us a new perspective on our own day and was a very worthwhile exercise; we are very much looking forward to working with the Countryside Foundation for Education on this year’s event.”
