New vendors were in evidence at the early July Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton Auction Mart (Mon, July 5) – and one of them, Frankland Farms, of Rathmell, Settle, marked their debut by landing both championship and top price honours.
As the Craven Dairy Auction July champion takes centre stage, exhibitor Chris Frankland, right, is congratulated by judge Howard Southwell.

Exhibited by Chris Frankland, the show champion from the family’s Newhall herd was a home-bred newly calven Holstein Friesian heifer. By a Cogent sire and giving 28 litres, she was acquired for £2,250 by Aubrey Greenhalgh, of Preston, a regular purchaser of Skipton dairy cattle.
Mr Greenhalgh also paid a show-topping £2,320 for a second Frankland Farms newly calven heifer, while a third entry sold for £2,150 to Geoff Midgley, Ludendenfoot. The Frankland dairy trio averaged £2,240.
The second prize newly calven heifer from Peter Baul, of M Baul & Partners, Bishop Thornton, sold for £1,900 and the third in class from Jeremy Taylor, Broughton, for £1,780. Newly calven heifers averaged £1,645.
While newly calven cows were thin on the ground, this class was noteworthy for the fact that it was won by a new Skipton exhibitor from the east coast, G Woodmansey & Son, whose Bramjill herd is based at Manor Farm, Bentley, Beverley.
Represented by Andrew Woodmansey and farm manager Ian Harbottle, their home-bred fifth calver, another Cogent daughter giving 42kg, was also reserve champion and joined Peter Longster, Harrogate, for £920.
George and Gladys Emmott, of Steeton, achieved a clean sweep of the prizes in the in-calf heifers class. Their four-strong entry peaked at £1,600 and averaged £1,330.
A nine-strong consignment from Craven Dairy Auction regulars Raymond and Robert Johnson, of Felliscliffe, Harrogate, incorporated a brace of Norwegian Red-cross heifers, which sold to a top of £1,830, averaging £1,730.
Judge was Howard Southwell, Thornton-in-Craven. The main monthly Craven Dairy Auction is scheduled for Monday, July 19.
