Verity Victory Hat-Trick at Skipton Gimmer Lamb Show
2010-10-08

Masham sheep maestros, Nidderdale father-and-son Roland and David Verity, pulled off a remarkable hat-trick when landing the breed championship for the third year in succession at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual show and sale of 6,851 gimmer lambs. (Tues, Oct 5)

The Veritys, of Grange Farm, Bouthwaite, Ramsgill – right at the heart of Masham territory – have won multiple titles over the years with their sheep, which are always turned out in peak condition.

Their latest eye-catching victors at the show, staged on behalf of Masham Sheep Breeders’ Association, were no exception. The pen of ten retained the Kemp Spokes Trophy - the Spokes family, of Long Buckby, near Northampton, has been buying Mule and Masham sheep at Skipton since the late 1930s.

The Verity victors then went on to sell for highest price in both class and show when knocked down at £180 per head (£125 last year) to Keith Liddle, Stainburn. The 399 Masham lambs forward averaged £82.48 (+£15.91 on 2009).

For the second year in succession, the champion pen of Swaledales was exhibited by John Tennant, of J & S Tennant, Low Bucker House Farm, Bordley, who retained the Craven Cattle Marts Trophy. The ten-strong pen sold for top price in class at £145 per head (2009 top price £90) to Bernard Simpson, Pateley Bridge. The 791 Swaledale gimmer lambs averaged £71.23 (+£20.67).

A total of 5,193 Mule gimmer lambs were sold at the 2nd annual open show and sale, which saw yet another championship-winning performance from Ashley and Rachel Caton, of Otterburn Lodge Farm, Otterburn.

With the 2010 Skipton Mule gimmer lamb champions to the fore, Ashley and Rachel Caton and family are congratulated by judge Brian Watchorn, Newark, left.

The Catons were responsible for the title-winning pens in three of the four championship classes at the North of England Mule Sheep Association annual gimmer lamb shows and sales at Skipton last month. The Blue Faced Leicester ram that sired the champion lambs was also reserve champion at the recent multi-bred show and sale of rams and females.

Their latest title winners sold for £138 each to Walter Critchley, Kirkham, with Mule gimmers averaging £82.54 (+£18.03).

The Continentals class resulted in a first-ever sheep championship success at Skipton for Kenneth Gamble, of Brickyard Farm, Easingwold. His pure-bred Texels, awarded the C Hagar Trophy, sold at £88 per head (£78 last year) to T Jackson, Goosnargh. The 468 Continental –x lambs averaged £64.04 (+ £1.25)
