North Yorkshire dairy farmers M Baul & Partners began the New Year as they ended the old when lifting championsip honours at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening Craven Dairy Auction. (Mon, Jan 3)

The Bauls, of Watergate Farm, Bishop Thornton, followed up on their December championship success with the first prize newly calven Holstein Friesian heifer by the Genus sire Die Hard, who has been used to good effect on their 180-strong Ravensgate pedigree dairy herd.
The home-bred title winner is out of a dam who is in her fourth lactation. Still in milk, her previous lactations have produced over 10,000kg twice and one of over 12,000kg.
Exhibited by Peter Baul, the January champion, which had calved 25 days before the show and came to market giving 30kg, returned to her roots when bought for £1,750 by Shaun Sowray, of A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton, who were Dairy Stock Farmers of the Year in Craven Cattle Marts’ 2010 Stockperson of the Year Awards.
The second prize newly calven heifer and reserve champion from Malcolm and Claire Grattan, Ripley, was knocked down for £1,800 to Wick Williams, Nantwich, Cheshire, with the third prize heifer from Jeremy Taylor’s locally based Smellows herd at Broughton finding a new home in Lancashire when acquired for £1,700 by Haig Speak, Ecclestone.
Mr Taylor was also responsible for the day’s top price of £1,860 with a newly calven heifer that remained in the area when joining Max Holmes, Chelker.
Best of the in-calf heifers was an entry from J O Fairbank, of Greetland, Halifax, sold for £1,140 to show judge Frank Wrathall, Gisburn.
With 28 dairy cattle forward, newly calven heifers averaged £1,559 and in-calf heifers £792. The next BOCM Pauls’ sponsored monthly Craven Dairy Auction is on Monday, January 24.
