Sowrays’ Title-Winning and Top Price Double at Skipton Calf Show
2011-03-23

The Sowray brothers, Peter and Shaun, from Bowes Green Farm, Bishop Thornton, Harrogate, added another Skipton Auction Mart calf championship to their growing tally when sending out the victor at the annual Spring show of rearing calves. (Mon, March 21)

With the Skipton March British Blue bull calf champion are vendor Peter Sowray, right,
and buyer Chris Broadley.

The title-winner, a 40-day-old British Blue bull calf, is by the Cogent sire Edenvalley Bojangles, who is currently performing well in terms of selling prices in the calf arena for the brothers, who trade as A Sowray & Son. They are the reigning dairy and rearing calf title holders in Craven Cattle Marts’ Stockperson of the Year Awards.

The Sowrays’ latest champion headed the show prices at £375 when purchased by Chris and Ruth Broadley, of Kirkby Moor Farm, Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon, one of four Sowray acquisitions among a seven-strong haul on the day.

While semi-retired, Mr and Mrs Broadley keep active by buying calves and bringing them on for a year, before resale. They say they like to keep their holding of up-and-coming youngsters around the 100 mark.

Judge Peter Bartley, Garstang, awarded the reserve championship to a 38-day-old Limousin bull calf from show regular Andrew Ogden, Cowling. The purchaser at £320 was another frequent Skipton calf buyer, Tony Binns, Harrogate.

The fixture produced an exceptional entry and keen competition from a robust attendance of buyers for all classes of Continental-cross calves, notably the stronger end. Black and white bull calves are strengthening in price, with best Friesian types consistently achieving £120+. The overall average selling price was £160, compared to £143.43 last month.

The show was sponsored jointly by animal feed manufacturer BOCM Pauls and TMR feeding system firm Keenan.
