New Partner Points to Farming’s Need for More Direct Access to Advice 2011-04-12

Rural surveyor Christine Baggott has been appointed a partner in Staffordshire-based Bagshaws rural surveyors and auctioneers.

Having joined the company in 2000, Mrs Baggott says today’s farming and land-based clients want access to advice and support for business to be quicker and easier.

“Just as communications have developed in recent years getting faster and easier to access, clients expect the same from advice and support services,” she says.

“Rural business is moving with the times. For example, a decade ago diversification away from core farm enterprises was the exception to the rule but today’s rural business has a broader commercial outlook,” she says.

“Key to many decisions being taken is quicker access to information. I see that on a day-to-day basis working with clients. I can now look forward to helping Bagshaws’ management team ensure those needs are met into the future.”

Other changes in business services are apparent. For example, today’s higher level of capital investment has seen more demand for valuations to help secure finance, appraise lending agreements and assist with planning for tax, she says.

And with long term investment being made the structuring of tenancy agreements and family succession to secure a business’ future is another key consideration for clients, emphasises Mrs Baggott.

Mrs Baggott has strong agricultural ties. Her family run a mixed farm in Leicestershire from where she progressed to studying rural land management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, later becoming a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Her career has seen experience gained with both local and national rural surveying practices in the Midlands and south of England as well as a period in the education sector in the US.

Mrs Baggott became a fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers in 2006 and represents finance company AMC to Bagshaws’ clients.
