For Peat’s Sake - It’s a Free Event!

A free event for all the family celebrating everything that’s great about the North Pennines Peatlands will run at the Durham Dales Centre in Stanhope on Saturday 4 June.

The day, organised by the North Pennines AONB Partnership, will be packed full of events and activities for all ages inspired by the fantastic moors and bogs found in the area.
There will be a whole day of peaty goings-on from 10am – 4pm arranged by staff from the North Pennines AONB Partnership and their partner organisations.

There’ll be children’s discovery activities, Food from the Fells cooking demonstrations from Love Food – North Pennine Dales project, river, water and wildlife information, minibeasts, flood information and advice and stalls celebrating the importance of the North Pennines Peatlands.

The star of the show will undoubtedly be the monster-sized digger which will come off the moorlands to be on display for visitors to the event to see. The digger is actually used to restore the North Pennines’ peatlands to their original boggy beauty. Organiser Lesley Silvera of the North Pennines AONB Partnership said: “In the past the peatbogs were criss-crossed with ditches to drain them, but now we understand the vital role they play in helping to reduce the effects of climate change and as an important natural resource. This very impressive digger is used to block up the old ditches so that the peatbogs can soak up and hold rainfall as they’re meant to.”

There’s no need to book for this event – families can just turn up on the day and admission is free.

On the same day in Stanhope, there is the contemporary craft tour event Meadowsweet from 11.00am – 5.00pm at St Thomas’ Church Hall, so there will be plenty to see and do. For more information on Meadowsweet, go to www.highlightsnorth.co.uk
