Reward for Oldest Working Haybob – A Brand New Model!
2011-08-12

Taking care of farm machinery has brought an added reward to one farming family from the Vale of Glamorgan, earning them a brand new Haybob to replace their still-working forty year old model.

The Morgan family from Penuchadre Farm, St Brides Major, Bridgend, entered a competition run by manufacturer Kuhn Farm Machinery to find the oldest working Haybob, and were delighted that their 1971 model preceded over 250 other submissions.

As Caroline Morgan explained, the trusty workhorse is now serving the fourth generation on the family farm that goes back seven generations in total, having been the first machine of its kind brought into the Vale of Glamorgan by her great grandfather.

“We are a mixed organic farm including dairy, beef and sheep and are self-sufficient in feed,” she said. “We still use the Haybob to row-up all of our haylage and silage each year, which typically amounts to about 120 acres. “We are delighted to have won a new Haybob, though I doubt we shall be retiring the old one just yet as it is still doing a great job.”

Caroline is pictured at the Royal Welsh Show in July being presented with the new Haybob by local Kuhn dealer David Evans of Llancarfan, South Glamorgan.

Kuhn also chose to award a new Haybob to Cumbrian dairy farmer Tony Mattocks of Aulby Farm, Laithes, just outside Penrith. Whilst younger than the Morgan’s machine, Mr Mattock’s vintage working Haybob was the oldest of a new registration system that began several years later.
