If you have ever thought about pursuing a career in the countryside, then a special event held in Harrogate next month (October) should appeal.

For the fourth year in succession, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is organising its popular Countryside Careers Day aimed at secondary school students from across the Yorkshire region.

The event on Tuesday 11 October, at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate, will showcase the wide range of career opportunities in the rural sector available for young people – from the practical to the professional, the traditional to the innovative.

Hazel Baker, the Society’s Education Adviser said: “The event has grown in popularity year on year, and I’m delighted that we are able to showcase an even wider range of career opportunities in the countryside. It is more important than ever that young people consider working in the rural sector. There are many exciting and fulfilling employment opportunities available but obviously the first step is to learn what is available and that is how we can help.”

Last year more than 1,000 young people attended the Careers Day – and organisers are hoping even more youngsters, aged 11 to 18, will attend this year.

As well as the more traditional careers, for the first time opportunities in the rural leisure sector will also be highlighted with North Yorkshire Sport showing how a passion for sport can be translated into a career choice. Working as a land agent, as a vet, a surveyor, a game keeper and directly in food and farming are amongst those which will be featured.

Representatives from colleges across the region will also be giving students an insight into the land based courses they offer. Representatives from Askham Bryan College, York, Craven College, Skipton and Leeds City College are amongst those who will be attending.

In addition there will be experts from the National Farrier Training Agency, the Northern Racing College and the National Gamekeepers Association and representatives from the British Pig Executive (BPEX), the British Woodcarvers Association, Dairy Goat Farmers, Tom Graham Falconry and the Otley and Yorkshire Dales Dry Stone Walling Association, to name but a few.
