Storm Desmond – Two Years On
In December 2015, Storm Desmond delivered unprecedented amounts of rainfall across Cumbria flooding over 6000 properties and businesses leaving a trail of devastation estimated to cost as much as £500m.
Two years on from Storm Desmond, the Farmer Network has organised a meeting to give farmers the opportunity to hear from the Environment Agency and other organisations about what actions have been taken to aid recovery since Storm Desmond and what projects are in the pipeline, including funding opportunities for Natural Flood Management.

Speakers will include Rory Stewart MP who established the Cumbria Floods Partnership and commissioned the Cumbria Flood Action Plan.

“There is much
talk about the role the farming community can play in future flood
management. The purpose of this meeting is to improve the dialogue
and communications between all the parties who have an involvement
in managing catchments to reduce flood risk across Cumbria and
make farmers aware of future funding opportunities.
The meeting will take place on Friday 12th January between 1pm and 3pm at The Shepherds Inn, Carlisle. The meeting is focused primarily on the farming community with limited places and farmers are asked to contact the Farmer Network to register for the meeting by calling 01768 868615.
The Farmer Network is a not for profit organisation that seeks to provide help and support to farmers and their business’s across Cumbria and The Yorkshire Dales. The Farmer Network currently has over 1,000 members.
The Farmer Network has been heavily involved in supporting many farm business’s to recover from the damage caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015.
