Mart Newsletter Urges Farmers to Prepare for Brexit

Farmers are being urged to prepare now for Brexit to ensure they are fit for the future.

The clarion call comes from informed agricultural sector personnel and key decision makers who have contributed articles to CCM News, the annual newsletter produced by Skipton Auction Mart, in which Britain’s planned departure from the EU again figures prominently.

Via the publication, expert commentators are united in their belief that Brexit remains crucial to farming and its very future.

Phil Bicknell, market intelligence director of the national Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), said:
“Preparation is key and farmers and growers can and should prepare now for Brexit by adopting best practice or risk falling behind. Brexit brings renewed focus on farm performance and there is plenty a business can do now to ensure they are fit for the future.”

Chris Dodds, Livestock Auctioneers' Association (LAA) executive secretary, and chairman of the UK Livestock Brexit group, commented:
“The UK is a high-quality producer of premium meat products, with traceability, good health and welfare and food safety among the key attributes of the UK livestock supply chain. We need to champion Great British produce and make sure that trade deals enable our producers to maintain high standards.”

Jeremy Eaton, Craven Cattle Mart’s general manager, noted:
“With turbulence at political level it has never been more important to have agriculture at the top table fighting for access to currently important markets, access to labour to keep farms and processors running and avoiding cheap imported product, which would discount the current improved prices received by farmers.

Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, said:
“As we reach the second stage in our negotiations for exiting the EU it is more necessary than ever that we engage with farmers to ensure their views are represented. I am committed to securing the best deal for British farmers, and the sector needs a strong voice in the upcoming negotiations.”

Recently published, CCM News, which also features a round-up of all 2017 shows at the mart, plus other relevant agricultural-related news and informed comment from sector experts, is mailed direct to representatives of the agricultural industry, predominantly farmers. It is also widely distributed distributed at regional agricultural shows throughout the summer months.
