1st Teviot, 2nd Yarrow

A similar entry of OTM cattle were dominated by a superb wagon load of hill cows from Carlenrigg which met strong bidding from all corners of the ring. The sale was topped at 117p for a Saler x cow from Messrs Douglas who also sold Beef Shorthorn to 115p. Norman Douglas sold Limousin x at 115p. Galloway from Jim Robertson sold to 99p. Angus x sold to 108p from Peter Dixon. Top per head was £822.25 paid for a native bred from Carlenrigg. 2 cast bulls met strong demand topping at £1.081.20 for an aged Charolais bull with Blues to £988.20 from Messrs Baxter.

Longtown cattle ring

A small entry of clean was affected by 6 day rule after Tuesdays store cattle sale but sold well with handyweight Black & White steers to £973 from Peter Armstrong.

A larger show of 4,483 prime hoggs were forward to a strong ring of buyers with the recent new faces present again. Best quality hoggs similar on the week, export hoggs and lightweight hoggs sharper and heavyweight hoggs short of buyer requirements. A tremendous show of 1,600 Blackface hoggs were presented and a credit to vendors. Overall average of 193.7p per kilo (SQQ 194.7p).

Top price of 276p per kilo for Beltex from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries and to £130 per head for Texels from A.R. Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.

Also today was the annual show of Blackface prime hoggs, kindly sponsored by The Scottish Farmer and ably judged by Mr James Thompson, St Merryn who had 23 excellent pens of 20 hoggs presented to him and his awards were as follows:-

2nd prize – Messrs MacArthur, Arnicle, 31 kilos, £63 to M. Lomax.

Longtown sheep ring

Another good show of 4,040 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, trade being £2 easier on the week in all classes although more ewes lacking flesh were forward. Best fleshed ewes still easily sold. Rams much dearer.
