Teiglum Win Highland Show Texel Championship

It was ladies day in the Texel classes at this year’s Royal Highland Show, with the overall championship going to the winner of the gimmer class and the reserve overall title taken by the winner of the aged ewe class.

Judge Robert Laird picked a gimmer from the Clark family’s Teiglum flock as his champion, with Procters Farm’s aged ewe in reserve. This gave the Clark family their first Texel championship at the Highland Show after more than 20 years of showing at the event.

Mr Laird said his champion, CFT1503905, was an exceptional gimmer with great breed character and femininity while carrying tremendous muscling through her top and gigot. “To top it off she is extremely correct in her legs and has the extra bit of sparkle I look for in a champion. She was hard to beat on the day and is certainly an outstanding example of the breed.”

This one, which was interbreed champion at Lesmehagow earlier in the season, is by Castlecairn Vavavoom and out of a dam by Strathbogie Smokey Blue. She’s a full sister to the Clarks’ ewe lamb which was first at both the Highland and Great Yorkshire last year and stood second in the gimmer class today. She’s also a maternal sister to the 5000gns Teiglum Valiant which sold at Worcester in 2014.

Standing reserve overall and reserve female champion was PFD1302614, last year’s champion at both the Highland and Royal Welsh and interbreed champion at the Royal Welsh. She is sired by Scholars Twenty Twelve and is out of a dam by the 50,000gns Haddo Ringleader. Mr Laird said this ewe carried exceptional power and scope while still being feminine and having great muscle and locomotion.

In the males it was Douganhill Vital Spark from Richard Wood’s Kingledores flock. This son of Glenside King II is out of a Denty ewe by Glenside Lachlan and goes back to Loosebeare Imp on his sire’s side. He was bought in Carlisle for 3000gns last year and was reserve overall champion at Lesmehagow this year behind today’s champion.

Reserve male champion was the winner of the tup lamb class from Angus McColm. This was MAE1601991, a Knock Trident son out of a dam by Annan Okey Dokey.

Mr Laird praised the male champion for his power and correctness and evenness of fleshing. “He’s an outstanding tup with a great body and legs. The tup lamb has a great carcass, with length and scope. The top places in every class today were well earned and all exhibitors should be proud of the quality of the Texels out forward.”

Leading the way in the shearling rams was Procters Farm with Llangwm Wario, a son of Baliter Vampire which stood reserve male champion at the Royal Welsh last year before being bought privately in partnership with Douganhill Farms, Caroline Hastings and Robert Osbourne.

The performance recorded ram class was won by Gordon Gray with GGH1606117, a son of Shannagh Won O Won.

Then in the ewe lamb class the winner was a lamb from Matthew MacTaggart, MTR1600976, a lamb by Ettrick Waikato Chief.
